I am still waiting or an answer from the apprenticeship board. I don't think mine is because Alberta jumps from wellhead boom truck to 45 tonne stiff boom, they have no category for 22 tonne. The biggest picker we have is 22, so to get bigger I would have to switch to another company. Alberta apprenticeship is apparently so far behind on ticketing journeymen that they have a pilot project where BC Cranesafe is coming here and giving the written and practical exams and certifying us, that's how I got mine but it reads certified in BC and Yukon. Although there is an agreement between every province except Quebec that they will accept another provinces qualifications and allow a guy to work.

Oh boy, talk about bad luck. The only company (1st Rate) who was willing to hire me, just found out that the guy who was in charge has quit. Waiting for the new guy to call back. I'm running out of options here, someone, anyone help me out. I'm thinking of heading back to Red Deer, not entirely sure what that will do but going tomorrow.

I wonder if I move there if I’ll become a cynical
grumpy old dude like this lot…so I’ve got that to consider now too.

Anyway, thanks for the advice…I guess.

There not cynical grumpy old dudes. there just telling the truth. Why sugar coat it for a new guy? Better you find out all the real info on the patch before you get your hopes up and get let down when you travel all the way out here.

For whatever reason, I can't get to the latest page of the thread, but to the poster that has hit a bump with 1st Rate testing, try Reform, Grant, Greywolf, Enseco, or Opsco. There's also a place called Dex and another called Cathedral in Red Deer--both are always posting want ads on Kijijiji (sp). Hope this helps.

I'm back after a week driving around Alberta... i don't mean to hi-jack any current conversations, but would appreciate a few opinions from the more experienced guys. I've been offered $3900 base, plus $18 - $20 per hour driving time, this includes Northern Allowance, but there is also a meal subsidy while driving, it starts at $25 per day and goes up from there. Accommodations provided only while out of town & no travel allowance. The position is Bulk N2 hauling.

It doesn't sound like a bad offer for a new guy to oilfield driving, any opinions?

    Thanks in advance.

    Eires.

The salary is better than most.
Downside of bulk N2 is you are mostly quiet thru summer, but maxed out in winter.
Good way to get your foot in the door as a new guy.
Maybe look to learn how to run an N2 pump if you are sitting on location for most of the shift, assuming they will let you. This would push up your hourly rate, if you get into pumping.
As far as driving goes, bulkers roll easily, and they are kind of ungainly and heavy for off road driving. You'll learn, quickly.

oilfield and rainyday lover Thank this.
