I have seen tons of great tips for winter driving on this thread, but I have not seen mention one very, very important thing that can save your life, and your career, especially if your a new driver in winter weather. It is the fact that before your in that slick, icy, snow zone, you need to know where the weight is on your truck/trailer. In winter, if you expect to drive in slick conditions, ALWAYS take the time to even out your weight from your drives and trailer tandems. This can save your life if you loose traction at faster speeds. If most of the weight is on the back of your trailer, then its Jacknife-city.

Did anyone touch on changing the Air Dryer...Very important..
Air dryers are installed between the air compressor and the "wet tank" on commercial trucks and motor coaches. Their purpose is to filter out water vapor, oil vapor, and other contaminants before they can reach the air tanks and valves. This helps prevent freeze-up during the winter and extends the life of air valves.
Most air dryers feature a replaceable desiccant cartridge to make maintenance easier. Actually, the only one we have seen that doesn't have a desiccant cartridge is the old Haldex Pure Air dryer. The maintenance kits for that dryer come with a bag of desiccant material.

Pound Puppy i agree with you...
The sad part is that many drivers of today have ''abused'' this Policy for there own Laziness,Lateness,shortcomings and there own Sissifacation..That is where the problems arise..I have seen these drivers pull over and say it is unsafe in the rain...

A lot of excellent advice.I didn't read every post but they all probably deserve the thank button..I don't do the rockies so Winter isn't a problem for me..I have drove thru many blizzards,3 last yr.But anywhere as long as no mountains I don't mind.

I'm no supertrucker but running low rpm/highest gear in slick conditions works for me. Keeps the torque down which causes traction loss. One other thing,I always throw 3 railers if chaining is needed. A single on a driver still leaves the other drive tire a chance to spin.
