I totally agree with you. I just can't stay still.Skydivedavec Thanks this.

I fully understand now. You're very wise and cautious, which one should be to do this job. I was the same way when first starting and made sure I wasn't an increased risk to others, just to "drive a semi". I would have quit in a heartbeat if I felt that I was not 100% safe for other motorists.
A lot of younger drivers are not that "thoughtful". I thank the younger ones that are!
You might be a tad overly-concerned, and tho the responsibilities are huge, the job is not as physically demanding as many other jobs.
Stamina and alertness is a priority tho, especially for longer hours and night driving. If I get the first signs of drowsiness, I pull over and either catch a quick (~15 min) cat-nap or grab a coffee/cold drink and get a bit of "fresh air revival". That's appropriate for my run, others may vary.Skydivedavec and Captain Call Thank this. -
The last company I worked for had a driver there that was the first one hired in 1974. He only works part time now, he makes 1 round trip to California back to Pennsylvania a month. The man drives circles around most people. Did I mention he's now 82?

I want to be like "Mike". That guy is my hero.Skydivedavec Thanks this.

I really am unsure about what exact meds are not allowed, however I am aware that they do look at that. As for the physical. If you can hump 25-30 lbs down a hallway without dying you'll probably pass a fit test/physical. Mostly they are looking for insanely high blood pressure, hearing issues and terrible eye sight.
Like I said, go for it man. What's the worst that happens? Someone tells you no? At your age this ain't your first rodeo brotha! Go out and get it.

No your not to old, we've got a guy that's 74 working for us that can flat drive circles around me. We've also go a part time guy that 82.
With the need for drivers you'll get a job as long as you can pass the physical.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Pardon the hijack, I needed one more post to PM the OP, OK?

Lots of input / stories regarding drivers in their 70's & 80's and how well they still do behind the wheel.
Just want to point out that these drivers have been driving for some time and not starting out as a new driver.
Captain Call I hope you are looking at this realistically and that you realize you will be limited by the number of companies who will even think about hiring a TRAINEE that is over 55 years of age let alone 64. -
Geez Flatbed, I've been perusing this forum for weeks now looking specifically for posts and opinions on this topic since I'm 56 and hoping to join the profession. From what I've seen your opinion is pretty much in the minority here.. That said, I don't know what your age is, but your time in service begs the question, Is it time for you to go to the house? I'm just sayin.
