Ok, so if you have read some of my posts here, you know I am contemplating a career change into the trucking world. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through the same mind games that I am...allow me to explain...
One moment, I am all excited to look into it. The idea of touring the land with no corporate stooges looking over my shoulder, something new, meeting great people, and (hopefully) making decent money, and just getting out there makes me want to go to CDL school RIGHT NOW.
Then, that other side of my brain kicks in. It tells me Ill be away from home, disrupting the life I have molded for myself over 30+ years. It tells me I may NOT make the money I want (well, need...there's a specific number that I need to continue paying the bills), it tells me about the "bad things that could happen out there".
Argh! i can't take it anymore...I have pretty much lived a safe, trouble free life. I have not taken any real chances. I guess I was always too comfortable. That's one of my biggest fears, can I even take the leap?? (God, I'm pathetic!) I am going to check out one of the local CDL shools later today, just to get some insight. I feel it's not fair to myself if I don't at least talk to someone in the know. My signifcant other wants me to check it out. Probably for my own good. She is on board with whatever I choose.
So, has anyone else gone through this? What are you thaughts/suggestions. What did you ultimatly do? Oh, and the school I am going to look at is NETTTS in Massachusetts....if anyone has thaughts on that...
thanks for reading!
I hate this...Mind games! Argh!

Well even though you maybe in that truck by yourself .... There's always someone " looking" over your shoulder!! Trust me... But good luck! It's enjoyable for the most part! I miss the road a lot sometimes..
truckon Thanks this. -
Well, yeah, I realize that. In today's world, you can't even walk down the street "alone".truckon and Truckergirl0720 Thank this.

With all respect, I am not meaning to be rude, but you seem to have an unrealistic fantasy of trucking. You are going to be "touring" truck stops and loading docks, you will not see anything that you can not see from your tuck on the highway. With all the electronics and tracking in the trucks there will be in effect many people "looking" over your shoulder. You will meet some good people and a lot of not so good people. As far as money it depends on what your idea of decent money is, how much do you need? Don't count on making more then $30,000 your first year and work your way up from there. I'm not telling you not to do it, but just giving you some things to think about.

When you're starting out (typically first year, or even two) if your "this way" or "that way" on your idea of truck driving, were a gas gauge...
then the needle would most likely swing from the 1/2 mark to 1/4 tank, related to your expectations.
And I'm probably being too optimistic.Charli Girl, Big Don and Truckergirl0720 Thank this. -

You only live once! As I've said before, when you're old and gray and sitting in the rocking chair, try not to have too many regrets looking over your life. We all will have some, but try to limit them. My family thinks I'm strange, just bought a home in Nevada 10 minutes from the strip, bought some condos in the Orient, one to live in when there, the rest to rent. I've lived in Florida, California, Tennessee, now Nevada. Oldest child is 48, youngest child is 7 & 5 more in between, newest wife is 30 years younger than me. Served in the Navy, got merchant seaman document, just one jump & risk after another. I did my part to uphold the finest traditions of the U.S. Navy, which is when in a foreign port, get stewed, screwed & tattooed. Just go for it, some day it won't matter anyway because life is running out one day at a time. Every day you live is one day less you have to live. In your last hours on this planet, try to leave with a mischievous look in your eyes.

Don't be so hard on yourself. We've all been through the same thing to some degree. One of the best things about trucking is that as soon as you get your first year in, it is pretty easy to switch companies (so it's not like you're trapped). Just keep low expectations because for most, being in the truck 24/7 with a trainer or co-driver is the hardest part. Just push through that and you will make it.Truckergirl0720 Thanks this.
