Hey mruffin. I can't send a pm until 7 posts. Basically every time you run north out of Loveland you will grab a grocery load on your way back south. Our region runs up to billings over to Pierre down through kearney south to Lamar. Then west to gunnison, rifle, craig, steamboat springs and everywhere in between. About 150 drivers on the board at Loveland. 30 more up in Cheyenne. Lots of retirements coming up so they will be hiring for quite some time. Winters can flat out suck..... especially wyoming. Running lots of two lane roads up through there. The mountains can be bad to but wyoming is worse. Lots of wind, ice and blowing snow. It's definitely a challenge. You got to know when to shut it down because if you pass up a pullover or parking spot the next one won't be for a hundred miles. If your not sure about the winter thing you might want to work out of somewhere else.
drozzer69, Desert_Skies and Jrdude5 Thank this. -
Thanks for the info hawkeye.
Did the truck rodeo this morning. Scored high on the first two. Rest was a wash. Oh well, always next year and I got a hat for attending. Gonna get my Friday done so I. Can head to the house. -
I made it to nationals this year in salt lake city. Had a great time out there and it was a great experience. I encourage everyone to participate in their local rodeo!

Basically a Truck driving obstacle course. 6 obstacles set up, points are awarded for each depending on what is required of the action. Top drivers of the local go on to regional, then to nationals like hawkeye. It was a fun experience and I will participate in it every year! I also got a ball cap and offered a couple hot dogs for participating. Too bad it was about 830 in the morning and I just had breakfast! lol.
Jrdude5 Thanks this. -

hell all I have read through this thread and am very impressed with what I have came across with wal mart. You guys give out great info.
a little about my self. I am new to this site and I am 24 years old. I currently work for my dad who owns a small construction business. It is def not something I want to do for very much longer. I went to college but never finished because I thought I had a pro baseball deal locked up after 2 years at a junior college, well that fell through and I mived back to Illinois. I have worked as a security guard, a supervisor in the meat market at county market, prairie farms, for my father and also played poker for a living for 6 months.
When I was younger and traveling for sports I was always interested in why there are so many semis on the road and how hard the work is and what the pay is. As said above I am 24 and have no clue what I want to do with my life.
If I were to try out trucking what company would best fit me as far as getting the training I need for the cdl and a "pre hire" if possible so I wouldn't have to have the full amount to pay for training?
How much downtime is there where you work and what kind of downtime would I be looking at as a newbie?
Are you guys allowed to go into places like a restaurant or a mall nearby where your waiting to load or something?
Are you allowed to take your laptops with you in the truck and if so are there options for Wi-Fi?
I play poker quite a bit still online and live...Say I was on a route to Chicago would I have time/allowed to go to the casino and play cash games ?
I see the standard for Wal-Mart is 5-2 and 6-3 for schedules is this pretty similar to what other companies are since I obv wouldn't be applying to wal mart with no experience?
Would it be better for me being 24 with nothing holding me down to do otr or ltl? gone for weeks at a time or home daily/weekends?
I currently live 3 hours away from Chicago and 2 1/2 from Saint Louis, Are these good options for me as finding a place to get my cdl and working for a good company with good pay or would you suggest me relocating somewhere else?
I am also very interested in moving to vegas being on my days off I would have plenty of options to play poker on my days off and have some family there as well (no Im not a degen and wouldn't spend my entire check playing table games etc. strickly poker to supplement my income)
so does vegas have good companies to work for as new drivers?
thanks for the help in advance and if there is a better place for this post then mods please feel free to move it but I like the questions and answers I read through in this thread and feel you guys can help me out since most of you had prior jobs before walmart and all were a newbie once
thanks,
Shane
