They should gain more than .1 by cutting 5 mph. I guessing more in the .3 to .4 range. They might even see .5 gain.
Assuming a .3/.4 gain will provide about a .03 cents per mile gain in costs. At 600 miles a day that comes out to $18. I don't know how many trucks are in this fleet that Breeze drives for but lets assume there are 200. Thats a daily savings of $3600. Breeze where you see fuel savings isn't so much in great big numbers all at once but its more a matter of multiplication. Even if your fleet was 25 trucks the savings is $450 a day. Lets say each truck in the fleet only ran 300 days in the yr that $450 a day grows to $135,000 in a yr. There is no fleet thats going to sneeze at those numbers.
I know a fleet near here of 25 to 30 trucks that cut their top mileage from 72 to 70 just for fuel savings. They've also been doing a lot of testing different idle reduction choices to see which one is best for them.

So if there is a measurable difference in MPG at the slower speeds, the speech Swift gave us about safety is probably a smoke screen. What they are really saying is: we want our trucks to travel at this speed because it is the most economical speed for the company.
-
My company recently installed a program in my truck that my speed is limited by my mpg.I don't fully understand how it works But it does so some-days I drive a 70 mph truck and some days I drive a 65 mph truck.
I do alright when I just get to drive because I feather the pedal never rev above 1200 unless I have too.I get punished because if I idle it kills my mpg and I ain't freezing to death just to go fast.
There are time when I need that extra horsepower because where I can control how I drive I cant control situations some drivers put you in and it is nice to have that horsepower to get out of them.
Now here is my question don't you have to essentially detune the truck to make it go slow and in doing so doesn't that cost you mpg?So isnt that like throwing the baby out with the bath water. -
No, only the top end is limited, the horsepower remains the same.
-
Well there is probably some of both. In the case of many Swift drivers imagine the horror they would cause on the roads if they were able to run 75. I'm sure they have a bone lot around that can attest to the fact that even at 65 folks can get into a lot of trouble. -
You sound like our safety dept!
Yes sir it doesn't happen on every trip but, leaving out on a Sunday morning with only one stop for lunch in Orange Texas can get me right at 67mph in my 70mph truck. In fact, I just did better than that from Moss Point MS to Hope Mills NC, 715 miles in 10.5 hrs driving time. My GPS data said I'd cleared 68mph for the whole day -1 stop for a lunch break.
Maybe my GPS system is slightly off or my truck is faster than what it says but I promise you as one trucker to another, the amount of time it is taking is correct. It would be my pleasure to post a screen shot of it if I am allowed to here.
Still, my point is -what can I expect to lose in hours per week? About 30mins per day I'm guessing? I'll know for sure here in a few weeks and post more of my actual data.
I swear I'm telling the truth
ADD: Oh, I just found the letter from my company and they do state that they anticipate a .1mpg savings -
WOULD THERE BE A SAVINGS OF TIME AT THE FUEL PUMP AS WELL
WITCH WOULD EQUAL LESS STOP TIME AND MORE DRIVING TIME.
-
You should be able to post your screen shot. If not you can send it to me and I'll do it. Please let us know what happens with your MPGs. I've read more than one article on mileage that states "for every MPH over 55 you lose .1" IF SO....
Slowing down 5 mph should generate .5 better mpg than you were getting.
That too. -

Okay, I hope the image is not too large...
I tell you what, I will try to make screen shots of my daily trips along with what the qualcomm says my mpg is. Last I checked it was 6.5 - then we'll compare the difference when my speed gets cut. I suppose I'll create a new thread for this little experiment and start from scratch. Here's my latest GPS data:

Please note that the max speed is when I was going up and down the hills on I-20 in SC. I'll try and make it a point to not do that any longer as to keep all this data neat and tidy.
Give me till next weekend and I'll try and put up some more stuff to compare.
