aluminum 5th wheel

You don't think twice about putting 50k on a all aluminum flatbed or dump what's the problem with it being hooked to a aluminum fifth wheel?

 

It's kind of like having a steel chain that breaks in the middle, so you decide to use an aluminum repair link. But really, to me, it's not so much that as the huge upfront cost to gain 100 lbs that will rarely (if ever) be the difference between a ticket and no ticket.

Plus, the notches on the 5th slider will shift more weight then that from one hole to the next and in what world will you get exactly 12,000 - 34,000 - 34,000 (or whatever you're allowed) consistently. A scalemaster is not going to wait 4 minutes for a tanker load to settle to decide if he's going to ticket you being 34,100 lbs on your drive. Typical Freight "settling" to the front or rear will shift more then that. I'm done with my mini-rant, now.

He's talking about moving scrap metal. It's all about moving as much weight as legally possible every load. 100lbs here, 100 lbs there it adds up when moving lots of loads eliminates wasted moves. Do you guys really think there'd even be aluminum 5th wheels available if they were unsafe and breaking all the time? Lawyers would be all over that.

 

you could save as much weight just by removing the passenger seat. I'd do that first.
