Pablo, their sick puppies in the US. There's a fuel line that keeps breaking on the right side and you have to remove exhaust to get it, their gutless, drink oil, blow seals and just total problem children. I seen several blown at 400k or so. I was serious....they are such a problem here that you can skim 10 grand off the dealer ( vs a Detroit ) if you agree to take one.
Only Freightliner has their parts too and FL is a pain in the butt. Understaffed and over priced with big lines in Houston........naw, thanks.
Mercedes like a Detroit?

deming807 and CondoCruiser Thank this. -
actually you are right it is not fully mercedes engine, it is MAN base d2876 , mercedes borrow this engine and give v10 to MAN, here it is only 12L(man d2866) , they are made in turkey or brasil, mainly for poor markets , come in busses, both normal and lying (hLa) and axor

My Detroit has yet to let me down. I generally idle bellow 15, but it starts easy at 15.

Mine is 500 HP stock. Tuned, Detroits can run with the cats. Plenty of guys have gotten over 600 HP out of their Detroit. There's even one guy who got 1200+ out of an s60. I outrun the cats on hills all the time as long as i downshift and keep my rpms up. Once that turbo kicks in at 1200 rpm, its a rocket.

I've had an EGR MBE4000 for 8 years now. It's been more reliable than my previous two non EGR Series 60. It also lasted longer than both of them combined and returned better MPGs than either of them. 825,000 miles with ZERO EGR and turbo problems. Total dollars spent by me on that engine in that time was $2000. (One injector nozzle and one oil leak). It did get a liner and HG update on warranty.
I'm convinced that the biggest problem with them was that they were geared way too fast, even faster than is recommended for "economy" gearing. They pull like a CAT motor only smaller, right down to 1000 RPM. can't do that with a Series 60.
Typical gearing was .73 / .74 OD with LP22.5 and 3.42 but that was about 1275 @ 60 MPH while the recommended economy gearing was 1375 @ 60 and performance was 1475 @ 60.
I put smaller tires on mine and changed RPM from 1340 to 1415 @ 60 and gained drivability and MPG.
You couldn't give me an EGR ISX or S60. No thanks.
Edit:
I've also pulled Super Bs (140,000#) with it. It was too small and had the wrong gears for the job but still beat the C15s by 25% on fuel but that was mostly because we were only loaded one way and had lots of PTO time.
Also pulled tridems (105,000#) from Vancouver to Calgary and was about 30 minutes slower than the 14L Detroits over the entire 625 mile trip and used 50-80 liters less fuel. That's significant.
The biggest thing is to take it to a Detroit dealer that has trained people. I wouldn't take it to any Mom n Pop for anything.Last edited: Oct 6, 2013

Mercedes are for 4 wheelers. Enough said!

There's a local outfit that pulls double pneumatic trailers grossing 150,000lbs+ with mercedes powered columbias, They have some with mercedes and some with detroits & they said they actually like the mercedes better than the detroits.

Probably because the Detroit sucks under 1300 RPM.
