I've heard a few "stories" as well. But when mine finally needed major work, I was so impressed that I opted for a factory reman because of the great service I got from my first one.
I never fix anything half way.

Once a guy told me he'd never own one because it only had 4 head bolts. I explained that there were 6 individual heads and therefore 24 bolts in total. I could tell he was trying to do the math in his head , maybe he only had four bolts in his head.

om460 and om470 got different cyl blocks, but really diffirense is minimal

btw, intake heater and FLA(flame starting system) is the useless on MBE. it starts well if starter cranks engine. if not intake heater wont helping

i used to remove FLA systems from dozen of trucks.

if you have DDMC ore star diagnose you can increase starting fuel and sometimes really dead engine may fire up

I don't believe this for one minute. I have owned cats, cummins & detroits and I dont care how fresh the batteries were or how good of a starter they had, they would not start in the winter without being plugged in. I have never....NEVER plugged my mercedes in and even on mornings witha 30 below windchill it starts right up. One morning I didn't wait for the intake heater and it wouldn't start, turned the key off & back on again.......waited 15 seconds or so for the intake heater to do it's thing & it popped right off. The intake heater helps.....

This is the first I've heard of an intake heater. Was it an option ? Where is it and what does it look like?

Same here on the cold starts though. Never an issue form to -20 C.

It's in the piece that bolts to the side of the intake.

    Here's a picture of it.

IMO - useless thing. Just change starting multiplicator parameter to 2-3 and engine fires at any temperature if starter cranks engine
