i know there are threads about the best GPS units and have read them but i am wondering if anyone has purchased a refurb unit...either the garmin dezl or the rand mcnally units. i am leaning towards refurb due to the cost of new compared to the other option? just looking for opinions either way. also if you have any issues with them and where did you buy them? thanks again

If you get the refurb, be sure to add on for the LTM's. Those are still available for the 510/710.

The rule of thumb (my opinion) for refurb units is the same regardless of which brand or what kind of electronic device it is.

Get them only from that factory direct, or from an authorized dealer of that brand company.

The reason I say this is because SOME kind of warranty and support is essential. Many refurb'd or reboxed devices will come with at least a 90-day warranty, if not the full warranty that their new one would have. This is important because 99% of the time that something has an inherent flaw- it will show in this first 30-90 days and your purchase is covered. Getting things from "unofficial" sources can sometimes result in no warranty if it has a problem.

As far as accessories or add-ons, the devil is in the details. So as Mark said, whether it comes with Lifetime Maps or not is a big deal for instance. So, in addition to using a factory-authorized source, check if things like maps, traffic, or other add-ons that would come standard with the new version also come with the refurbished one. If they do not, then calculate the cost of that on top of whatever the refurb price of the unit is.

The only exception to this is if you find a irresistibly low price. If it is just "crazy" low to where you would not be too angry if it died in a month and have no warranty, then go for it.
