Ok, so I have a year and a half of experience, so I'm still just a rookie more or less ;) I figured I'd ask you guys about this because...I personally feel this is the best place to be for this post. Ok, so my year and a half worth of experience came from being with Central Refrigerated. They used electronic logs, so everything was cut and dry (either the truck was moving, or it wasn't; either you were fueling, or you weren't--that sort of stuff).
When I went through the training and orientation for Central, they did show us how to do paper logs, and although I'm a bit rusty...ok...so I'm VERY rusty lol *blushes* :') I was wondering how having paper logs will change my driving experience.
I'm not talking about the obvious changes, like...yes, I realize I need to be truthful and mark down everything I do at the time, but as far as drive time goes--what do you do to handle that? Do you use an alarm, a watch, are there any secrets? Also, with the new DOT HOS regulations, how do you handle your half hour break before your eight hours of drive time is up? I realize you have to mark it down and take your half hour, but I don't know...
I'm not trying to sound dense or anything here, I just wanted to know how paper logs change the way you do things.
I suppose the reason why I'm worried, is because while I was over the road, I met a lot of people who ran paper logs and took advantage of the hours. I don't want to do that, I want to be able to be honest with what I'm doing and do this the right way. It means a lot to me, you know?

Do you run a laptop? I've used driver daily log for years, and there other programs, but the are all basically an electronic log sheet. They do wonders for preventing silly math errors. And I use mine as my alarm. If you keep your duty status updated, it will show you on the screen what time you'll have a violation. The headaches they save are well worth the cost. (DDL is ~$100, if I remember right.)

Aww, thank you :) I will definitely look into that! I do have a laptop, too. My orientation/interview is on Monday, so (hopefully) when I get the job I'll be using that program very soon! :')

Section 395 is your friend.. LEARN the regulations and definitions and then use a watch and you BUTT as the guidelines, butt hits seat, update the log. Run until you close to one of the limits, shut down, repeat.

Ok DONT OVERTHINK THIS-?w/the exception of Hammer(a laptop? Seriously-?besides even a CARHAULER can count can't they?) LMAO
Just log it like you do it simple--Your log graph is just a flat 24 hour clock--Just draw a line on the corresponding line for what u r doing EXACTLY the way u did it--the ONLY thing to b aware of is changes in duty status--since u now have only 15 min increments to work with--my personal rule of thumb is if it is under 8 mins use the 1 /4 hr before over 8 mins use the one after----
But seriously there is nothing to it--its simple really--Just draw it like u did it--heck even i can do it! Lol

it was a huge relief for me. A bit more work, yes. But now I don't feel like a slave to the little box in the truck. And I don't feel like someone is constantly watching me. I feel much more trusted and a bit of freedom, I guess. I don't worry about forgetting to log off duty, or whatever, and having to peck thru a clunky system to edit it. Or worry that someone is going to notice how many times I edited because I forgot.

As for cheating, I don't do it simply because if something happens, the days leading to that point will likely be gone over with a fine tooth comb. Especially with paper. Plus, with this job, I don't need to cheat. Honestly, there were ways to cheat the box, and it made you want to just because it gave you an itty bitty sense of free will.

You can just simply use a watch. Not trying to be mean. But if you start at 0600 you know by 1400 you need to stop for at least 30 min . Your 14 is done at 2000 at night . It is not hard , don't over think it. You are a smart person , you will do fine !

sdaniel just pointed out an important mistake you made in your OP.

That being, the 8 hour rule for the 30 minute break.
It is not 8 hours of driving as you stated, it is 8 hours on-duty time.
As such, it is easy to figure out when you need to stop.

But if you stop too early you may be required to take a second 30 minute break.
