I am sitting here thinking about how to word this...but my first instinct is to ask you, OP if you are stupid. I know that's not what you want to hear, and you will probably get pissed. I don't really care if you like me or not but I do wish to see drivers make money, so I won't say it. (Got all that?)

Alright amigo, here goes:

Do you have your own equipment right now? No, because you said that you are thinking about buying it. What do you need, do you know? No. Do you have your own authority? If you plan to do a contract with John Deere or Kubota, you're going to have to have your own authority. What else are you going to pull? If you plan to pull solely JD and Kubota, you're going to have an awful lot of deadhead.

Your opening post is like someone who played Nerf football, watched the game on TV, and is now talking about buying pads and equipment to play for the NFL "I have been playing Nerf football for a year. I want to buy my own pads and jersey. How do I go about signing a contract with the NFL?"

i don't know about putting a plan together like that, but it would take alot of planning. Even when my spouse and i were thinking about doing the lease thing. I ran the numbers and i don't see how we could make any money. But maybe i'm not to business minded. And he is wanting to do all of that with only 2 years of driving. I would at least get some years under his belt before he ventured off to do that. Learn the business first.

Whats wrong with having ambition ? All he's doing is asking a simple question.

 

Ambition is great. 2 years into trucking and trying to play with the big players might be tough.

I sort of agree with the sentiments expressed here and sort of disagree. Working with broker's is hard, the games, 90% total B.S. rates, lies, etc.... It's really pretty easy by comparison to walk into your local equipment dealer whom you've known your whole life and tell them you have a truck and would be interested in hauling some equipment. I don't think the kid's stupid, I think he's smarter than most who think you have to go to load boards, you have to do this or that. Find you some customers, start building yourself a business, not just begging for crumbs. Actually figure out what the best rate you can offer is. It isn't always about sucking every last nickel out of someone. Don't be one of them, do what you want to do and take pride in it.
