Looking and pricing a new turbo for a 3406b caterpillar. So many new brands out there that to be honest I've never heard of. Anyone who has had experiences with some aftermarket turbos your input is appreciated.
Thanks a bunch.

Type 3406 turbo in the search bar, there has been a bunch of discussions on this subject. Most everyone agrees that Borg/Warner is the way to go, a lot cheaper than Caterpillar and no core charge. A lot of people recommend the 199119, or the 199114, the 199119 has been changed to 178063 and sells for around 900 to 1000 bucks. Another popular turbo is the 177148 which is a gated turbo, but is great for low end and top end. I have a almost new 178063 that I ran about 3000 miles and didn't like that I would sell for $800, but you have to have a lot of power or fuel to spool it or you will have high egt's. Smokin Cat will probably weigh in on this and is well versed on this subject.
ODR Thanks this. -
I forgot in my earlier post to tell you that Turbo Exchange in Concord,N.C. or any Truck Pro is just two places that I know that has decent prices, I'm sure there are others but these are the ones I know of.

It would help to know what is done to the engine, but the 199114 is a good all around choice, it's uses a smaller exhaust housing but other than that it is the same as the 199119. I myself would suggest a 177148, in my opinion this offers the best all around performance.
Get one from a BW dealer, TruckPro can get any BW turbo usually pretty quickly.Slick900 Thanks this. -
I just talked to the place I get my turbo's from and the guy was telling me of a different turbo that is supposed to be better for a mechanical cat than the 199119. I don't have the number for it but he was explaining some to me. It has the 1.32 exhaust housing with an F-trim wheel. Now I'm pretty sure he said it has an 88 on the intake side? Now I'm not a turbo guy so soemone with better knowledge can maybe explain it better.
The cost was $1200.00. -
That's a big ### turbo les, the 3408's and KT's don't even use a turbo with that big of exhaust wheel.

The ol' 198123 is old school/obsolete anymore?
-
I have had good luck with the OR-6051 turbo on any B I have put one on. I'm sure borg warner has a less expensive version that is just as good. I have put a couple of Pittsburgh Power stage one turbo's on for customers they say its noticeable difference. Like SmokingCat said without knowing your set up and expectations its hard to throw out ideas. I like these two for a B model that is everyday use I guess is the term.

Which one?
-
The F-trim turbine turbo you were talking about.
The 198123 which is the BW 6051 is older tech, the 199 turbos use a more modern design compressor wheel. Not say the 198123 is a bad turbo, but it also has a large exhaust housing, but there is a smaller housing option for it as well.puncher Thanks this.
