If you read the comments the photographer tried to motion him to back up prior to filming.

    He probably did.

Student: "I'm up against a low bridge man!"

Trainer: "Just make a u turn."

You realize how long trucks have been 13'6"? And that generations of us learned to drive without these kinds of issues? The decision to try that u-turn demonstrates such a lack of decision making skills that I'm quite frankly hopeful that dude doesn't drive again. People who do stupid stunts like that kill people.

If you stay on truck routes, the bridges have been raised, and it's not cheap to do. It's long past time that our solutions as a society devolve to lowering standards to the lowest common denominator. But that's an issue that gets into politics...

First time I've seen this, man that's painful to watch. I've been in some situations where I've come up on a bridge I couldn't get through due to an overheight load and poor routing where I had to get backed up but never got myself in a jam like this. Worse comes to worse call the cops and have them help you get out, better than wrecking a truck like that.

Regardless of how you feel about it people like the guy in the video exist so factor in the cost of blocking traffic all day, repairing a truck, police diverting traffic, etc. or simply adding room to u turn or a cheap sign lit up with lights telling truckers to detour. Man why do some many truckers have to try and argue with every opinion? This is the only forum where I have to get into it with someone and I visit a lot of political forums. I can't mention that the weather is nice without someone trying to argue.

As humans we have a tremendous variety of character differences. In this case the person has a trait of acting before thinking, possibly combined with a poor sense of spacial relationship. He'd probably do much better in some other job. We have to analyze our talents and skills and choose a job that fits us. Those who don't, or who are just realizing the need to, sometimes try to do some job they aren't cut out for and make expensive mistakes. There are those of us who jump in a truck and drive it perfect from day one, and then there are those who need weeks, or even months of training to get the hang of it. If it takes too long to get it, maybe better off doing something else, we don't need drivers who are accidents looking for a place to happen.

I generally has to do with the fact that you insist on popping off about things you either know nothing about, or don't think through. And you've done it since you joined here, and some days I don't hold my tongue as well as I should.

Think for a moment about costs. Raising a bridge or cutting the roadbed are multi-million dollar projects that you're suggesting we should do on every low underpass? Even though they aren't on truck routes? As far as signage goes, go to 11foot9.com and see how well that works out. Your argument is equivalent to requiring all motorcycles to have training wheels because some people don't have good enough balance to ride. Or all trucks should be automatics because some can't shift. Navigating is as much a part of driving as operating the truck. You don't lower the standards so anyone can do the job. Or rather shouldn't, as that's part of trucking's problem.

No, my philosophy is way beyond your comprehension which is proven by my success that is currently unknown by you. Therefore my logic seems to be incorrect by your simplistic means. At first I thought like many things drivers with a long driving career possess a lot of knowledge but I see drivers with 20+ year experience who cannot back to save their lives. Even when I was in the trainer truck I explained new things to my trainer who was driving for 35 years that he never knew. I was referring more to a simple u-turn gravel road or a sign with flashing LED lights to better alert new drivers which isn't very costly. Yes I talk a lot and can back it up (pun intended).

Yes it was senseless and stupid and a definite destruction of property, and I'm not excusing that, I just think he and a lot of others think it is so easy to turn trucks around like that and have no clue they basically jack-knife on them.
