It is sad how little is done to ensure a positive training experience is being provided and its not like the driver training is not being paid... at upgrade we compared notes....there was no written review btw... and the same story all over...no backing..filthy conditions...the night shift all the time...and having to listen to somebody ignorant nonsense that have no thing to do with the job at hand...

Seems they STILL have a problem,
yet it never gets resolved.
I wonder why ????? -
One of the guys is stuck driving at night all the time... my trainer said we aren't supposed to drive midnight to 6am though? So there is even confusion about that.
Anyway... the truck conditions are inexcusable. These trucks are going through Springfield to pick students up, there is ZERO reason someone can't walk outaide and look at the conditions of the trucks.
I'm sorry but when I am back to Springfield they are in for an earful. My trainer and I get along really Well.. so even with his bad habits I'll just stick it out and get my cdl, but That's no excuse for a lot of what is going on and there is simply no excuse for what my other friends are dealing with.
Personally I could have paid for and gone to a "normal" cdl training program, but many if these other folks don't have the credit nor the savings to do that and feel like they need to sit back and not rock the boat. I feel really bad for them. I am not one of those people though, and someone WILL be getting an earful when I am back to Springfield. The media loves stories like this... I'm guessing the M word alone will be enough to light a fire under their butts... -
Sorry, bud. PSD only.
As far as your friends on those not so clean trucks, I would recommend that they take pictures of the cab and bunk areas (or video) and email them to their Fleet Managers AND Stan Kasterke (The training guy) You could even include Steve Larson (Slarson@primeinc.com) and request to head back to Springfield to get a new PSD instructor. I am all for cleaning up the PSD instructors and EJECTING all of those dirtbags that don't follow the rules. Rules by the way that have been very very very clearly spelled out to ALL of the instructors and trainers. Pee bottles, excessively dirty trucks, driving midnight to 6am in the beginning are all violations that should be taken seriously.
Anyone else reading this that is going to any company, if you get assigned to a dirty truck or a dirty driver, report them immediately... at the yard if possible. Don't go empty handed, take some proof with you. (pictures or video)Bkkphotog and Criminey Jade Thank this. -
I was under the same impression about night driving students, but set straight by Stan.
Students can drive any time day or night if the instructor deems conditions are good. The instructor is sitting next to them and the students should be rested with the truck stopped at least 10 hours a day.
It's TNT that has restrictions on night driving the first week. Trainees at that point are driving their own shift and do not have anyone sitting next to them. Like PSD eased into more driving hours they have to be eased into their own overnight shifts a few hours at a time.
If they can't handle overnight shifts, they should consider a different line of work... Especially in Reefer Div.Highway101 and silenteagle Thank this. -
...and you know what? You're right. You should speak up, and especially your friends. However, they're the one's afflicted with the "dirty truck" problem, and they are the one's that need to carry the flag in this fight.
Two things... first, you keep on throwing around how much money you're spending for this. Let's set this straight. Stay for one year after you go solo A-seat, and it's free. You won't be spending a dime.
Second, if you start threatening management back in Springfield, I'm sure they'll call you on it. Those folks don't suffer fools, and won't be threatened. I believe you'll find yourself spending all of those dimes very rapidly. Without a CDL, or a job. Think this through very carefully. That being said, you and your friends have a valid point, and may be able to make a very welcome and good change in the program for the better. I agree, all new instructors and trainers should be on probation and part of that should be regular inspections of the cleanliness of their tractors. Think about how you present this to management... go in with all guns blazing, threatening them will not get you anywhere.
Now... here's the other part of the story. I talk to instructors and trainers, and one of the huge reasons I refuse to participate are the stories I hear of filthy students who do the most disgusting things in the sleepers while their instructors/trainers are driving. The most recent one was the TnT trainee who crapped in one of his trainers towels, and then stuffed it behind the bunk.
Yep... it's all on the instructors and trainers. It's never the students.BigRigEvan Thanks this. -
However you want to say it, we signed a contract for $3800. That will essentially be paid off if we work for the company a year, but many ither companues would also reimburse us for thay as well on a monthly basis if i go work for them. On the bottom line is a financial debt though.
I have thought this through, taken pictures, documented everything that comes up... I know my rights and I know how to present myself.. I am no fool but I also will not be pushed around and I am the one with the law on my side. I do not intend to walk in making threats, but I do expect to be taken seriously and professionally. I have photos from the other trucks as Well. There is a such thing as workable conditions, and we cannot be held to a contract for either money nor employment if we are being asked to do it in unsafe conditions... and filth is considered unhealthy and unsafe as far as I know.
Anyway, I don't intend to go in shouting... I am a rather professional person and have worked in professional environments my entire career. I don't plan on staying silent though, at the very least I want to make sure everyone back in the headquarters knows what's going on out here.
BTW - will be back to the terminal to test around the 25the woot -
Remind you and your friends you had one week to decide if training was not right for you. That was plenty of time for these problems to present themselves, and for you to ask for a new instructor. You have no one to blame but yourselves for not reporting the problems and continuing in a situation that makes you uncomfortable.
You're not employees... Not even hired yet... Even as a PSD.
watch your step there Norma Rae. Deal with your own problems, make your own complaints. you can advise your friends, but I wouldn't stick your nose in their problems or complaints to management... Or lump them in with your complaints. -
No, sorry, I will not blame myself for the pathetic supervision of this program. Unfortunately man even if you get your CDL before coming you still need to deal with this garbage to work for them. As a company, I think Prime is a good company to work for when compared to the many other choices available to new drivers, so I'm doing what I can. Obviously too many people had your attitude though chuck which is why nothing is changing.
We are nit employees but we are bound by a contract with Prime as PSD students... and both parties are required to uphold their end of the deal.
The way some people seem so afraid of management is sad. If I go in and discuss my observations and grievances as an adult I have nothing to be afraid of. My grievances are valid and backed you with evidence. If I mention any other I will not use names but I will mention it as I have photos from them as Well.
To some it may seem I am looking for a fight but I am not your average trucker personality I guess.. I am a businessman -
BTW I found a PSD training packet in some materials that weRe handed out and never explained to US on our last day of class and looks like the training we are supposed to be getting is pretty clearly spelikes out and supposed to be checking stuff off and signing it every week. Yea my trainer acted like I was showing him hyroglyohics when I showed it to him. ugh
Also read through something else that details a little finer points about the road test that have never been explained. like not shifting during a turn - my trainer does it and has never mentioned when I did it that I will fail if I do it on my test. come on!
