Apparently after my first month I am
not meeting the efficiency standard. My idle time is below 5% and my overall fuel mileage is in the high sevens but the main thing they told me they look at is these other numbers that go into an efficiency rating. Speeds over 61 and rpms over 1350 put you out of range and you have to be in range over 90% of the time.

Does anyone know how I can improve this? I didn't think I was going that fast or over rpming and I'm not sure exactly what else contributes to the rating.

First off at 61 my max speed I cruise with 1410 rpms. To get it below 1350 I need to cruise 56-57. So I'm wondering where they want me drive at. He recommended no more than 60 but that only drops the rpm to 1400 which still is out of range.

Second overspeeds. I haven't been bombing down hills, but do I need to really be hitting the brakes hard before it crosses the 61 line at all? It's pretty hard to try to keep it at an exact speed. I thought more like keeping low but not being super paranoid about it. I am trying to watch the road after all and no just stare at my speedometer.

Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to fix it? Do they fire you if it's not met two months? I'm disappointed because I was trying to not idle an shift and drive like they wanted me too, and after a month I saw almost 8 mpg an under 5% idle and thought they would be super happy but quite the opposite.

Your truck will lug an upshift at 1350 up a hill?

What they are trying to do, without saying so or having it in writing, is to force you to drive 55 to stay in compliance with company policy. I once worked for a reefer company like that; the trucks were governed at 68, but to stay in compliance with company policy and keep from being fired, you had to run 54 mph. That rigid policy gave them an excuse to fire drivers they just didn't want, for "failure to follow company policy." Very stressful working conditions. Search for another company that's more resonable. There are many companies that let you run the governed speed, so you only have to watch your speed on downgrades; if you do that no one hassles you.

I'd watch my speed on the downhills anyway, regardless of company policy. As far as the other compliance issues, I'd run from that company. they didn't have that when I was there and if they did I'd have left sooner.

Really hated that crap when I worked at May. Many times while in Brooks I got pulled in the office for the talk. They really do go thru every piece of data on you daily looking for things to nit pick about.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Believe me, Kermit is jumping for joy with your efficiency numbers. You are not going to get fired with those averages.

Their main point is fuel milage. The trucks are leased and go back to Freightliner or Peterbilt after a certain amount of time/milage. What they are trying to do is get the most MPG they can.

I run a Long Nose Peterbilt, nothing aerodynamic about my truck ... Yet, I average 7.7 mpg. Thats huge! I run same engine and 13 speed as a May Truck.

Don't get yer kickers in a frenzy .. They do treat ya like a child, but what they want is MPG.

1300-1350 RPM up a hill is perfect, the engine is humming .. As long as yer in the right gear. That depends on weight.
