We are buying a new rig, we haul super b (140,000lbs) in hills. I know the engines in this setup are fairly newer and more rarely used but I figured some owner ops should have some insight into the reliabilities of these motors...
Please don't talk about cam issues on a isx from 2006... I'm looking for engine info from 2010+ please. Comparing these motors to the same one 8 year's ago won't work as the emission controls were way different.
Thank you all for your insight, I betcha a year from now I'll be regretting selling my n14 but oh well.
600 dd16 or 600 isx15?

Uh huh. You're really going to regret selling that red top. I would put a bet on the ISX before the DD16. All the new motors as you know have issues with the new emissions. Fuel milage is still going to suffer with the weed burner and with as heavy as you are shouldn't be much of a concern because you're going to burn a crap ton of fuel to begin with. Cummins used to I'm not sure anymore but used to have a 625 motor and I'd go with that over the 600 I believe cummins was like cat the 600 was a 1950 tq and the 625 was a 2050 tq. Also the cummins will have more advancement for parts from PDI for upgrading for more power (can never have enough IMO). You're going to get 6 of one half a dozen of the other with each motor.

FL and Western Star have both available, and I'm sure you would find dealers on both sides of the fence. I'd ask them since they sell both. Not that much call for the big power ones at dealers, I have not seen either of them lately.
The other makes would probably try to sell theirs instead of Cummins, from what I have been reading lately, and then you have Volvo with the D-16, there is nothing else available in new anymore with that much horsepower from the factory. I haven't heard that much good about the D-16, but I have actually seen a few of them.
The neighbors just bought another new t-800 with the Paccar MX to pull triple axle hopper. They have had the first one for just over a year and got a day cab this time. I don't know what was in the ones they are replacing for engines. -
The DD16 was built from the ground up to comply to and function well with the newest EPA rules. The DD15 is a fine engine and a 565/1850 version of it with a 2050 driveline, 13 speed and 3:73s on lo pros would be my first choice. Of course this setup will require you to run under 65 to get any fuel mileage. My personal experience with ISXs has been that the newer they are the worse they are and the more power they make the more likely they are to eventually explode. I currently have a 2009 ISX and it has been a PITA and costly to keep it running properly. From what I hear the newer ones with SCR are even worse.
You mentioned ISX cams from 2006. My 2009 cams failed at 380,000 miles at a cost of $6,000. They had 1/8 inch grooves worn into the lobes from the rockers contact. Cummins should be ashamed. -
Rontonio has a DD16 on order right now. You might want to pm him on why he chose it.

i dont think id want an isx at 600hp my old man has one that wont stay together at 475hp been rebuilt 3 times in 50000 mile this time there putting a short block in on cummins dime
-
oh i forgot was three diff shops so id go with the green motor
-
DD15 if you are paying . They'll pull trains just fine at 140, and fuel parts and service make way more sense. My 2cents
-
i suspect he wants dd16 because new dd15s only go to 505 hp i believe
-
That's right, my current Truck eats dd15's for breakfast and with this weight and hilly terrain more power and torque equals less fuel used.
