Industry Standard Rates

    Does anyone know of any published information as far as an industry standard for rate/mile for Pnuematic Bulk Tankers/Blower Trucks? We are trying to set our rates to the industry, but would like a benchmark to start with.

    Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    Your question needs more info like from where? to where?

    30% or higher fuel surcharge, depending on the current price of fuel.

    If you have liquid tank loads i can help more.

    Biggest thing you need to determine is the distance travelled and time it will take a carrier to do an average load. Every company will know what they need to run a truck for a day. On my main run I can do two trips a day. The first trip will cover variable costs for the trip (fuel, repairs, wages) as well as the fixed costs for the day (truck/trailer payment, insurance, licenses etc). The second trip will pay me a profit.

    If you have long wait times or frequent break downs then expect to pay wait time unless you are a big player and can bully the companies around (which happens to me at one location).

    As for fuel surcharge it is dependant. You can set the rate higher and give less of a fuel surcharge or a lower rate with a higher surcharge. All a company will look for is that it is a fair surchage that will cover the fuel costs as they fluctuate.

    These would be dry bulk tankers hauling abrasive/sand material. I am interested in a nationwide industry average but if the information was broken down by region, that would be of use as well.

    A nation wide average price will not work in all regions. You must know all lanes and rates. What are you trying to accomplish here?
    If you want it to be easy and simple i would suggest leaving dry bulk freight to those who are willing to put in the effort.

    I have put in plenty of effort to gather the data from the loads we have scheduled internally, so I know the rates for the regions we ship in. However, I am trying to verify what the industry averages are in those regions without calling 900 carriers in each area to get an average. I see that as a waste of time because no one will give me their best rate because we dont have a relationship.

    I don't want to come off as insulting or anything, but this reads as if you are coming into a shipping department and trying to cut operating costs. Perhaps you're paying a certain rate and not getting the carriers cooperation on scheduling or customer service. Apologies if I'm mistaken, that's just how it reads to me.

    There isn't a lot of industry standard in this industry at all when it comes to rates. People tend to play that very close to the vest for any number of reasons. So, as a shipper, your best bet aside from just dealing with a brokerage, is to actually do the legwork and aggregate your own rate data. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for here.

    No offense taken. The issue I have is I am in Iowa and we have a bunch of warehouses and shipping locations along the gulf coast, mostly the Houston to New Orleans region. We have our standard carriers we use, but the perception certain people have here, mostly from what "customers are telling them" (so who knows the validity), is that our pricing on our bulk tankers is out of market and too high. So I am looking for some proof of that without trying to have carriers come undercut our current carriers and ruin relationships. I dont want to stir the pot unless I have proof we are out of market. Does that make sense?

    Therefore I need some data. I have our internal data and averages in the regions based upon the carriers we use, but if those are out of market, how do I prove that?
