mobile police scanner

A scanner could come in more handy than a cb radio. I've been seeing more accidents as of late. I don't run a cb currently because rarely does anybody call out accidents. I have seriously considered a scanner.

 

Is it possible to block police channels on an old Bearcat 7 to make the rest of the unit legal?

I really only use the weatherband and the CB channel scanning since most of the police are digital now.

 

Motorola doesn't make 'Police' Scanners.

TDMA2 is not that common YET.


I would hold of on buying a New one..
Until we find out what Whistler Does with the GRE Line.

Trunking Scanners are fairly easy to program if you know what you're doing.
Trunking Scanners are fairly cheap.
DIGITAL Trunktrackers can be expensive..I have a Radio Shack (GRE) Pro-96 and the Uniden BCD396t.
Also keep in mind more and more places are Encrypting a LOT of their Traffic, some places Encrypt everything now.


Just drove from KC to Denver, Monitored Missouri Highway Patrol, KS Highway Patrol and CO Highway Patrol, all of which are on Digital Trunking Systems.
I am sitting at the Denver Airport right now listening to the DIA Trunking System.

The Trunking Systems have several advantages for the Listeners as well.
Example, previously for the Missouri Highway Patrol, most of the time you couldn't hear the Cars/Officers, unless you just happened to be close to them or close to one of the Mobile Relays.
Also if you were at the Edge of a Troops coverage area, don't think you were going to even pick up dispatch unless you had a decent antenna.
The Stock Rubber Ducky on a Handheld Scanner, forget about it...maybe if you are outside, but well I would think for most people are....they are probaply doing a little bit driving.

Now with the Trunking you can hear both sides of the conversation.

Yes Sir a blunder on my part (Motorola =scanning). But here is a question specifically for you. I am certain that with your knowledge you are already familiar with www.radioreference.com.
Do you also read the radio forums on www.batboard.batlabs.com/viewforum and www.p25.ca As for a dedicated (700-800mhz)
monitoring radio, the old Astro Saber III (used +/-$200)is excellent for listening in on Trunking Systems. The mod for this can be found on the p25 site.
For antennas I like the Austin Condor series on HT and I never got to try it but the Scantenna (Base)is inexpensive and gets rave reviews. Note: Shame that Monitoring Times run has come to a close.

There are a few free scanner apps for the iPhone, and I'm sure that there are also apps for the Android as well. I use
Emergency Radio and 5.0 Radio. While you can't control it like a real scanner, I've had good results. Simply enter the state you're interested in, the pick a city or a police or fire channel. I use it at home and on the road, can play over remote speakers or headphones as well as your smart phone. You can even listen to other countries, like Australia live. Free and not easily discoverable by the the police in your local area.

 

Isn't it true that these mobile scanner apps are delayed 10min - 20min between broadcast

Yes, I actually post there also, as BaLa.
I try to submit updates to the DB whenever I can.

I have 3 different NMO Mount Antennas, I swap out as needed.
Just got a Mirror Bracket Mount for the Truck, too.
I have a VHF/UHF/800.

Not sure about that, I was listening to live feed sitting behind an accident a couple weeks ago, or at least very very close to live feed. The apps still do not broadcast digital broadcasts

 

No delay at all. You may also want to look at Radio Reference on the web, good info there and you can listen from there as well. Not as easy as using one of the apps. Give them a try, the price is FREE. They do have ads but not a big issue. Or you can pay a few bucks to get rid of the ads, after u try the free versions.
