I'm kind of with skateboard man. You are the provider and do what you have to do to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. You either have to adjust to being away or find another job. Don't even think you are trapped because you are far from that. There is so much opportunity for someone in their 20's if you just look.

If you want to change things then use OTR as a tool to move to a place with more opportunity. But keep that job. Without a payday makes things worse. There ought to be opportunity in Sikeston or Springfield like a LTL job that pays good and you are home every day. Then you wouldn't be far from extended family.
There are all the union construction trades that will take you in on a paid apprenticeship program. There are numerous gov't jobs that will pay you while you train. For example I was hired as an Air Traffic Controller in the 80's. The gov't paid me $3700/month back then while I went to school. My brother was a nuclear plant operator. He was paid great while he went to school. There's always the military which can lead you down a great path with great family benefits. You don't have to be an infantry man on the front lines. There are tons of behind the scenes technical jobs. My oldest brother worked with helicopter avionics and now is drawing a military retirement while making over 6 figures working for a military contractor. He retires next year from that job and will have two retirements. Look on USA.gov for potential gov't jobs. They also post in newspapers. That's just a little piece of what's out there if you just look.

Find what you like to do and then try to make money doing it. Never under estimate what you can do. Trucking is great but it's not the only job. Family comes first.

    Dark Majesty,

Apply everywhere; not just a few places. The goal is to get multiple job offers and decide from them. Good luck.

Whoever told you life was going to be easy or fair lied to you. Life sucks sometimes. You do what you have to do. I could sit here and whine and moan about how unfair my life is. I've certainly got reasons too. My husband abandoned me when I was pregnant with our third. Two of the three boys have a disabling bone disease. I spend my life in and out of hospitals for various surgeries for the boys. In the last two years there's been 27. Next week there's two more. I haven't heard from their father in over 11 years. I had to quit a job I loved for a corporate job I hate in order to provide for them. Does it suck? Yup. Does it do any good to complain about it? Nope. I suck it up and deal with it. And you know what? My kids are happy. They know they've got a mom that loves them and would move heaven and earth to make sure they get what they need. They're respectful, hard working and approach their challenges with a good attitude. Honestly, I couldn't ask for better kids. They learned to deal with life by watching their mother deal with life. If I wanted to raise a bunch of pansy-butt whiners, I would sit here and whine. But I want hard working, resilient kids, so I get off my rear and do what I gotta do.

There's a lot more to being a dad than physical presence. Does it suck to be away from your kid? Sure it does. But if you've got a steady job and provide for your family, and you're a good loving dad and husband when you are home, your kid will know that. If you whine about how much you hate your job or bounce from job to job and are generally ill tempered when you're home, your kid will know that too. What lessons do you want your kid to learn? What kind of man do you want him to grow up to be? When you decide that, be that man.

Please, excuse me for correcting you, but it does not matter what you THINk "outlaw" means. And quite frankly, I don't care what you think it means.

You see, this is how the English language works. There are words that we say, and each word has a very specific meaning. It is not up for interpretation. A word has a definition, that definition is what the word means.

Now, here is the definition of the word "outlaw" as its listed in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

1 : a person excluded from the benefit or protection of the law
2 : a lawless person or a fugitive from the law b : a person or organization under a ban or restriction c : one that is unconventional or rebellious
3 : an animal (as a horse) that is wild and unmanageable

so, I ask again, what gave you the impression that this driver is looking to run illegal, unsafe, and like a dog? "Outlaw"

Actually I would believe in this sense Outlaw is used in the same sense as it were with Willy and Waylon and the boys. They wern't criminals, but they also weren't a bunch of mind dead conformist pansies who got pigeon holed into what the industry wanted them to be.

I think that is the overall problem with the industry today, too many milk toasts with bottled up rage and anger issues, not enough rough necks who know how to get a job done with out having a conniption fit or a pity party.

I must say looking at your stats if they are correct and you have a whole year in the industry, verses Landstar8891's 28, well you should probably be listening to him instead of behaving like a know-it-all poindexter.

I can say this because I have been in this business now over a decade, and I still continue to learn, and in that time I have seen guys who behave like this come and go, its like an old John Wayne movie, You have the experienced hand played by the Duke, then you have the Pilgrim, well Pilgrim, you've still got a lot to learn.

I still don't understand why you old folk feel so threatened by the new guys. Everyone gets old, and every one passes on. Your prime doesn't last forever.

Why not accept the facts, you old timers are being replaced. Day by day by day.

instead of the ol' BS "I've been at this for over a decade... He has 20 some odd years on you, he must be right." Why don't you put on your big girl pants and and throw in some useful information instead of the typical old truck driver "stories" of how it used to be!?

dont know if you've noticed yet, but it AIN'T what it used to be!

MI can't speak for the other new guys, but I've been know to run laps around the ol timers. Life is a young mans game. Get over it. Just remember, once upon a time, you were in my shoes.
