Got a question for anyone who has a private pilots license as well as a cdl. Where you have to log both legally, say if I am on home time and going up in the plane does that screw with my 34 reset? Does that have to be considered on duty or is it considered off duty.
The reason I am asking is I have a good friend with a Cessna and a instructors rating and he offered to get me going for the price of fuel. It's always been something that I've wanted to learn to do.
The only thing that I'm wondering is how to log it legally. Any info would be appreciated

I don't see any log issues.
I have a commercial / instrument / multi with 2900hrs total time and I don't log any time towards the truck when i'm in the plane. that's my time and what I do on my own time for recreation is none of my elog's business lol
it's going to be a hard thing to tackle if you aren't home every weekend. those skills need to be repetitive and consistent during training and if you do a little and then don't get in the plane for a few weeks you go back and play catchup until you're good on the last lessons again and then go forward from there again...... and then you have to be able to go a fair amount just to keep your private current and not have to go back up with an instructor to get signed off solo again. and it's #### expensive. you need to have a good bit of disposable cash to be able just to stay current, much less get out and joyride and go anywhere once you have the ticket......unless you're lucky enough to get a fuel only use of an aircraft as well. I try to go every time i'm home and at least get in a couple of runs around the pattern if nothing else to count toward my required takeoffs/landing to keep my licenses current and I have to do a lot to keep all 3 current with both single and multi engine.
having said that, if you can afford it, go for it. best thing I ever did. sure wish I was still flying for a living but it's much like trucking in that if you've been out of the seat awhile it's hard to get back in and the longer you've been away the harder it is.....that and being a young man's game as well.....
why would you think you'd have to log private time anyway? I don't even think if I did any flying for hire i'd have to log it against my cdl. but, I also have never thought about it before but they are two distinctly different and separate licenses. I could be absolutely wrong about that but I can tell you for sure if I flew a trip for hire on a weekend my elog would never knowMilktanker and J_FROG Thank this. -
Awesome thanks for the quick response. Yeah I didn't think it would be an issue but me and my dad were discussing it and he brought up the log issue so I figured it would be an interesting question. I can be home pretty consistently to go up and I figured all the bookwork along with the ground portion will give me some good stuff to keep me occupied while on breaks on the road.

Ihave my pilots license, and have had for 20 years. The time logged in the plane has nothing to do with any employment or work , and as such does not interfer with your truck logging or time off.
It is a hobby that you are persuing on your on time and is all off duty.
The only time you would have to log it for trucking , is if you were getting and/or proforming under any commercial pilots certificate.Milktanker, J_FROG and flyingmusician Thank this. -
Yeah that makes sense, that's how I figured it would work. Me and my dad just had a debate going on it so I figured best to ask the guys that do it lol.
-
There is no conflict. If you are training to be a private pilot, Not Commercial, ATP, etc then you are being it for your own benefit and are not subject to any rules regarding trucking. It is as if you are in your personal vehicle. You don't log that time do you?
TIP: if your friend is an "old school" instructor, be sure to wear a shirt you don't mind having ruined that day you solo. Ask your instructor why....flyingmusician and Milktanker Thank this. -
lol that's funny. mine is hanging on the wall with the date and time and place written on it in marker with all my certificates and diplomas. not many guys out there that follow those old traditions anymore. mine was one of them. that seems like forever ago and in a way 25 years is I guess. that made me smile just thinking back to that day. I was never more thrilled, proud of myself and absolutely terrified all at the same time lolMilktanker and CobraDane Thank this.

Yup. Same with me. My first solo was the most excited i'd ever been. And I think the T-Shirt Ceremony should be a requirement from the FAA.J_FROG Thanks this.

You don't want to wear a good shirt the day you solo. I wonder if they still do that? I haven't flown in some time. It is a very expensive hobby, but well worth the effort.
J_FROG Thanks this. -
...if you had your commercial ticket then it would be another story
