I'm guessing you've never been through the Banning, CA scales on a busy day.

It isn't illegal to route yourself around a scale, any more than it is illegal to run country roads rather than a toll highway. I route myself to avoid scales, either by actual roads or time of day, and I am pretty particular about staying legal.

I just don't like the scrutiny, the presupposition of guilt, or being treated as a revenue generator. Come on you trolls, I already pay federal, state, local, highway use, heavy vehicle and fuel taxes. Is it any wonder I avoid interaction with revenue agents masquerading as public servants?

I expect a lot of states MCE units would actually. Here in the northeast though, its fairly simple to do without looking too obvious. Out west, well I haven't been past Ohio in several years.
