I'm not a truck driver but I drive my little Hyundai across the USA and Canada all the time.
I respect truck drivers and it makes me very mad when people disrespec them. I do the following things:
-When I'm merging on the highway and a trucker merges on the left so I can come onto the highway, I wait so he can change back to the right lane.
-When a trucker needs to pass on the right or left lane, I flash my lights so he can enter.
-When there's a disabled car on the shoulder and a trucker has to pass(Michigan and Ohio Law), I allow him to switch lanes.
-When on the Pennslyvania Turnpike(very hilly), on downhills, I allow the trucker to pass me so he doesn't have to switch gears. When the uphill starts, I allow him to switch to the right lane.
-When a trucker allows me to pass, I flash my emergency lights and say "thanks".
Anything else I can do to make a Trucker's job easier? I know how hard it is to drive a truck, especially when there's a million cars hogging the road!!!![]()
I respect truckers, but tell me more!!

DON'T FLASH YOUR LIGHTS to tell him he is clear.
turn them on, then off, then on again.
A blast of bright light ruins one's night vision for a few seconds. -
Are you sure? I've seen other truckers do it to other truckers.
-
Yes, and its very irritating. Imagine 40 tons rolling down the highway at 70mph. Now imagine that with a blind driver. Now...imagine cars 3 feet from 40 rolling tons at 70mph with a blind driver. Do you want to be next to him?
To play devils advocate, I do flash my running lights when signalled by a car that its safe to return to the right lane. I figure just getting a response from 4wheelers is good, so I let them know I appreciate it...even if its not the correct way to go about it. -
I have to agree on the headlight flashing...not only is it really irritating, but also a safety issue as stated. During the day, it's no big deal, and actually can help....for instance if the sun is setting/rising, flashing the high beams sometimes is the only way I can see you back there when I get past you.
But I'd also like to say thank you for taking the time to even care about the big trucks and what we deal with. It's like a breath of frsh air to see a car actually pull their head out of the clouds and realize that there are other vehicles on the road.
As for telling you more....I'd me more than pleased if you just kept on doing what you're doing. Be aware, pay attention to what's happening around you, keep showing the courtesy....who knows, it may even rub off on others.

Yes,Yes,Yes, there is one other thing you can do. That is simply teach about 99.9% of the other people who drive to do the same as you do. And thanks for your courtesy and appreciation!

You're doing a good thing YoYo.. and Pappy is right, educate the idiots out there.
I personally have a CB in the Buick. I talk to the drivers frequently when I am traveling. So you guys who travel 99 in CA, if you see a big blue Buick sedan, with twin firesticks on the rear fenders, my handle is MamaBear! -
This is a biggie in my book. I'm about to the point of not even getting over. Cars will stay next to your trailer for miles while traffic stacks up behind you. Then when that car finally hits the gas to get past you, everyone in the left heads for the right lane and your stuck out there.
The way you do it makes the most sense. Let me back over and then a natural traffic flow will continue. -
yup, agreed.
Few things get on my nerves as much as 4-wheelers who will aggressively pass a truck on the right while he's signaling to get back over. -
This happens to me occasionally as well. What has always worked well is when the 4 wheeler merges and wants to pace rather than speed up or hold back, I will activate my signal and make it clear (I hope) that I need to get back in the RT. lane. At the same time I back off slightly (1-2 mph) to *help them along*. There has only been 1 case where they didn't get the message (really old couple in the car). And yes, one has to be very alert to the impatient ones behind who see the signal as well but insist on moving to th RH lane intending to pass.
YO.........really appreciate your courteous attitude. Thanks!
