I appreciate your thorough answer (Big Don). The new medical examiner actually told me the exact same thing, if I got into an accident, I could get into big trouble, so to cover my butt, he told me to get a note from my primary care physician stating that I am off of the mental health medication and also a form that he gave to me for my physician to fill out of the things that I am dealing with (ADHD, OCD and Depression) and that he is monitoring me and that I am fit to drive. The medical examiner said that those paperwork will cover my butt if I ever got into an accident as a truck driver. So I don't know, do you think I am screwed? Or that I should be okay? I believe I should trust this new medical examiner. It really sucks to not know if this will bite me in the butt in the future or not. But one thing is for sure, I am sort of glad to know that I am getting some good input from everyone.
Do you think it would be my best interest to go back to this first medical examiner and try to sort this out? Espcially since I am not on the medication any longer? Or do you think that would be a bad idea? I don't want to stir the hornet's nest with the first medical examiner where I am afraid he would want to report me to the DMV for a failed DOT exam. I mean I don't know.Last edited: Oct 26, 2013

Leave the Dr. who failed you alone. He made his decision and he's not going to change it. You going BACK to him to "sort this out" helps you in what way? Actually, you are going to be calling attention to yourself by continously picking at this sore. You say that you want to be employed and provide for your family.... etc, then leave the Dr. alone who failed you especially since you have moved on to Dr. B and passed. One more....quit picking at the sore, soon you will be wondering why it won't stop bleeding. Good luck.
Big Don, Ponderingmuscle and Chinatown Thank this. -
First off, I agree completely with Leftlane. Forget about going back to that first doctor. He would take it as a challenge and if his ego is big enough, well, lets just say leave it alone. . .
Now as to whether or not you are screwed, Ponderingmuscle, I just don't know. I know that if you bring this whole thing up to a prospective employer, that employer likely won't hire you. You just need to be aware that you are going to have to be very, VERY careful if you enter this business as a driver. Because it doesn't matter what your family doc puts down in writing, if the worst should happen, an average attorney will tear you apart.
I just don't know what you should do here.Leftlane101 Thanks this. -
The statement that you want to go back to the first doctor who failed you seems to indicate that the OCD is controlling your thought process.
As stated by others, as of Jan 2014, all doctors have to be registered with FMCSA to give physicals and have to report pass/fail results. Doctor shopping is going to be a thing of the past.
While you maybe just fine, 99% of all companies send you to "their" doctor for a physical when hiring and you have to pass "their" physical and "their" doctor may observe something that will disqualify you from this particular company. And a note from your doctor won't mean squat if they have a different opinion.
You will never know until you try. Leave sleeping dogs lie and get on with your life.
Good luck in your job search. -
This kind of bugs me. Nothing personal, but being the guardian of a family member with mental health issues (my mother) I have seen what happens when someone stops taking their meds. Now not knowing your condition nor what meds you stopped taking I really can't give an informed opinion. You stopped taking your meds to do an end around a failed dot physical and now are magically all better? Guess I have just dealt with a paranoid schizophrenic who tells me "I'm better now I don't need the meds" for so long any mention of the act makes me very suspicious. The stopping of the meds is usually, no, always followed by a gradual but certain deterioration of mental faculties. I have dealt with this for 20 years.

baha Thanks this. -
I believe this will depend on just what the mental condition is though Digger. Big difference between schizo and depression or ocd.Ponderingmuscle and baha Thank this.

indeed, thats why i mentioned that not knowing the condition or meds keeps me from making an informed opinion on the OPs situation and instead have to base my opinion on my personal experience in this area. If it was just ocd or depression why not say so and list the med? We are all pretty much anonymous here. Not doing so just seems to make me more suspicious.
Once again my mindset just comes from dealing with my mom. People think folks with mental issues are stupid with the cunning of a 2 year old. I'm here to tell you that is not the case. It took years for me to catch on to how devious they can get. Come up with something so off the wall and almost convince you that you're the one with the problem. It certainly is an adventure and has just made me so wary of anything like this. -
The new medical examiner is correct.
People get sick and recover everyday. It's not like you are scarred for life. The human brain doesn't stop growing until 27-28 years of age. I honestly believe many younger people are misdiagnosed with ADHD and OCD. Some is family life, some is social and peer pressure, some are from teenagers using drugs. But less than more actually have a real disease. For some doctors it's a money game. Back when I was younger it was considered growing pains and young people do grow out of it. Being diagnosed with such along with the medications is enough to make anyone depressed. I know there is certain medications I can't take.
I've watched my niece go through the process of being diagnosed with that stuff and I thought the doctors were crazy. There was nothing wrong with her that nobody else doesn't go through. Yet give them pills and send them on their way. Doctors react to what they are told and a short observation. Not any get a real chance to observe some over a period of time which sometimes is needed.
I would keep trying but always be honest. Your biggest hurdle is not this first medical certificate. When you hire on with a company they will send you for another DOT physical with their doctor. He is the one you have to get by. A recruiter might tell you everything is okay and you travel hundreds of miles to start your career only to be sent home a couple days later. That's something you'll have to be prepared for. Some companies might throw you to the curb so have some back up money to buy a bus ticket home just in case. We have had some new students on here that have been abandoned and no way home.
Though a doctor says you are okay is the company and their insurance company willing to take a chance with you? That is the final hurdle.
You definitely need a letter from your doctor stating you are stable to drive. From a specialist would even be better.
You are not the first nor last. With a little effort and a little luck someone will give you a chance. You might get rejected 2-3 times and the 4th will give you a shot. You know yourself than anyone. There is a lot of stress in this job and you have to have a cool demeanor. So if there is something that might set you off then you don't need to be in this safety sensitive career.
Good luck and I hope it works out for you. If not there is plenty of other opportunities out there.
I posted some random things from the FMCSA website below.
