RainX does wear off if you don't apply it correctly, and it wears off with time and use.
And you're right, it can be a pain.
If you want to rely on it you have to work at it.
The first application is the most important, since that is what fills all the little cracks and holes in the surface.
First, clean the glass with Windex.
You should apply it with a paper towel, folded flat a few ways.
Wet the paper towel with RainX, then rub it into the glass in a circular motion.
Re-wet and apply until the surface has been covered, as you can only do a section at a time.
Then do it again. And rub it in until it appears to be a dry flat haze.
Then rub off the residue with a clean cotton cloth. An old t-shirt is perfect.
That will give you your base coat.
As soon as you notice the drops streaming off the glass getting larger than 1mm, repeat the process.
And repeat it periodically even if it doesn't rain.
The nice thing about RainX is that stuff does not readily stick to the glass.
So ice build-up is lessened, as well as road grime.
If you want the full effects of RainX, you can never be lazy or cheap about using it.

Well, they are windshield wipers not snow plows.MZdanowicz Thanks this.
-
It was not snow, they were frozen to the windshield.
My snow plow story?
Driving from Chicago to Milwaukee in my 4WD Chevy in heavy snow. Following two plows out of four lanes. The 4 wheelers are not passing the plows in the hammer lane!!!! So I take the empty granny lane and roar past them.
Only to be smothered in a avalanche of snow from the plow! The wipers almost stop moving, it takes many wipes to clear the snow! Then I watch the temp gauge climb as the snow has packed the grill blocking all air flow.
But I managed to get there....
MikeeeeMZdanowicz Thanks this. -
You need spikes or golf cleats, the old steel ones. Then it would be safe.

The defroster always works for me

Find a freshly filled piss jug. Nice and warm!

Passing a plow on the right?
That's just dumb. -
I always get a chuckle when I see those "Don't Pass Snow Plows On The Right" signs... what state is that?... Missouri? -
