Does anyone know what (if any) the fee is for taking the cdl written test? I live in Iowa and I've tried to find out on the internet but can't seem to locate a web site that tells me that. I wanted to know so that in case I take the test and don't pass, it won't cost me anything and I can take it again later. Thanks.

Don't quote me for sure, but I do not believe that Iowa charges for the test, you only pay when you pass and get the license in your hand.
CondoCruiser Thanks this. -

IA is cheap. -
There is no fee for taking the written exams or the skills tests....you only pay when you want the plastic card that is your CDL!!!

Thanks guys for the help. Now I can go take the test as many times as I want until I pass, than I can get myself a kick-### job driving a big rig!!!

If you read their book you wont have any trouble. Good luck! And let me know when you find the kick### part!

I will let you know. I've decided to go after my cdl class b instead of the class a because the cost of the training for the class a is something I can't do at this time. If I can get my class b, I can still drive other types of trucks but not a tractor-trailer rig. At least I'll be able to get my class b and maybe I can get a local job driving a straight truck or something similar.Last edited by a moderator: Oct 28, 2013

If they are like most states you get 3 tries. Most of the questions you see at the end of each chapter in the CDL manual you will see again. This forum and many other places have practice test. They are multiple choice and usually two of the answers are stupid. With a little studying for a week or two you should have no problem.
Keep in mind getting your CDL A and getting a job is not that easy. Many starter companies want a certificate from an accredited school. Then you will be sent with a trainer for 6-8 weeks. The quickies will release you in 3 weeks but most new drivers aren't ready then. It's not impossible to obtain on your own but your starting opportunities are greatly limited. How are you going to road test? If you are going for your class B's then it shouldn't be much of a problem. -
I am going for my class b, not the class a. I would really rather have some kind of a local job because I don't want to be away from home for weeks at a time. I know that otr jobs can pay really good but I want a job where I can go to work and come home each night and have my weekends off.
