I have heard that all container loads (from port or rail) are already brokered by (hub group?). So the mc that you are leased to gives you a piece of the piece that he has gotten (2 hands already taking from the load).

I have also heard that there are some mcs that somehow get a third hand into this, and give this further reduced rate to their leased on trucks. Is this true?

Is there any way to haul containers directly from a broker? Does anyone do this? And is Hub the only broker for containers?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You will " hear" many things in the trucking industry. There are many brokers in the container business, most deal directly with the shipper, not through someone else.

JB is right...typically ( in Houston anyway ) there is one freight forwarder or broker whom deals with the SS line through an interchange agreement. Yes he makes money on the load and he actually pays well. I would be a rich man if I could work directly for him.

Containers are cheap and heavy. It's a tough game....too tough for even some megas. Knight folded his Houston intermodal group. USA nearly went belly up with theirs. Been several others try their hand at it too. MC stereo types don't work here.

The only way Schneider and JB make it is they own the pigs and have a special deal with the rails. They both own some flat cars too and they reload the pig on the other end and eliminate the line (otr) unit. ( But charge for it ) Xmas pigs are already running....been running since August.

    Good luck

    That makes sense, thanks guys.

Now my next question is that near me (outside Phily), there are probably 15 to 20 motor carriers like ARL, Farrugio's Express, Road One, Land/Evans, Bridge Terminal Transport, etc) that work out of the Philly piers and CSX, and Morrisville and Allentown rail, that lease on owner operators.

So, if I understand you guys correctly, each of these motor carriers are getting freight from different sources. Is that correct? I ask because I will be leasing on to one of these guys in the future, and I am trying to understand more about this part of the business in general.

    Thanks again for your help.
