also, to the I'm not slowing down guys... what makes your load more important than the guy you expect to show down to stay behind you? Hypocrite much?
The thing is, out the only 3 excessive bad habits I posted, 2 of them are actually laws in a lot of places. Refusing to yield to being passed, puts the the blame of any accident that coincidentally happens on you. Intentionally blinding someone with your high beams, doesn't just make you as fault for accidents, but can risk license suspensions, costing your job.
just because we drove trucks, it doesn't mean that traffic laws don't apply to us anymore, actually the exact opposite.
Some of you think there we more important thongs than this thread, fine, think that. But for everyone else, 2 of those habits are potential accidents our tickets, 1 is extremely dangerous, maybe not for the other truck, but there are other cars and trucks on the road, that you're putting at risk to prove a point.
Remember, fully loaded, a crash in these trucks have about 900,000 to 1million pound of momentum,the actual force will be higher. These tricks are not the place to mess around, you're in a killing machine with the power to tear a person's body apart. Avoiding these habits aren't for you, their protect everyone else on the road from you. And these things aren't just limited to new drivers, a lot of long time drivers do it too. Just remember, while you're doing these things that seem small and really not that important to point out, another truck somewhere is gambling with your family's life by doing the same things.falcon241073 Thanks this. -

you say that if I refuse to yield to let you pass and a incident occurs it is my fault? so I am driving in the right lane you in the left lane try to pass & cannot make the pass in a timely safe manner, so it's my fault for not tipping my hat?Joetro and blairandgretchen Thank this.

I drive locally in Minneapolis/St Paul, and this is my biggest pet peeve I rarely will move over for any 4 wheeler anymore because of it. I move over, and they never let me back in the right lane, and leave me stranded in the hammer lane. So instead I'll let them ride along side me on the shoulder, or better yet, they can yield to me, and get behind me.
Completely wrong way to handle the situation IMO Use both lanes to merge into one NOT take matters into your own hands, and then back up traffic for an additional 1/2 mile because you think you have that ability So instead of having 2 lanes of traffic backed up for a mile, we now have a single lane backed up for 2 miles because you feel the need to play traffic cop? -
With the new e-log "drivers" I stop and look both ways at any truck stop.what's up with "drivers"going thru the gears like they just got green light at dragstrip,coming off fuel island?

yes, and so do the cops in probably most of the state's drove in. Depending on the exact story, blame might be shared, but in court, the judge is going to ask you why you didn't slow down when you saw oncoming traffic. I'm sure he'd love to hear the other guy's fuel story an excuse. Even on 4lane roads, you'll actually be ticketed for an accident if you decided to pace someone passing you instead of let him past. He's going faster, just let him go and be done with it

Here's why:
What if the passing vehicle ALSO decided to slow down when he saw the oncoming traffic? Now we've got 2 trucks slowing down side by side and he's still stranded in the left lane.
When being passed, (as with dealing with merging traffic), maintain your lane and your speed, and leave the decisions up to the passing (or merging) vehicle.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
when passing, you're not supposed to slow down. this is why there's actually a law on who yields to who, to avoid situations like that. When being passed, you're supposed yield the person passing you. Unless he stayed the pass when it was clearly unsafe, outs your fault if he doesn't make it over before traffic hits him.
you're saying maintain your lane and leave the decisions to the person passing you, but the law says the opposite. once they're making the pass,by law, you're supposed to key them pass.
Both our you shouldn't be slowing down. once you commit to a pass, you make it... because getting back into the lame might be hard if traffic moved up. That's why the person being passed slows down, so the person passing can be guaranteed that he can get back over. But if he goes to pass you and then I move to where he we and there's a line behind me, if he brakes, he's not making it back over. Make sense?
Now if the guy passing slowed down, then he'd be at fault, not you. -
I'm on cruise all day long. Sometimes speed fluctuations are do to hills, not the driver. On an uphill, heavy trucks slow down, but light trucks keep going at cruse speed. Ont he down hill, the heavy trucks all fly past the light truck that has his cruse on, just to get passed again on the next hill. If you wont be able to maintian your position ahead of the person you passing regardless of hills, then don't pass.
Now I cruise at 60 or 65 depending on load weight and deadlines. If I want to pass someone going 1 mph slower, I can put the hammer down and pass um like I mean it. If you cant do that do to your weight or Governor, then either stay behind or wait for a big gap to pass. I don't like wasting fuel, so sometimes i'll stay behind someone slower so i dont burn fuel to pass quick. I generally wait for a good opportunity with the hill and then pass. I don't care about the few seconds i'd loose slowing down for you. I care about the fuel i burn to speed back up. Also pass when your truck has the advantage. if passing a truck heavier then you, pass on up hill. if the other truck is lighter, pass on downhill.
