This would not work for passenger cars, ever drive with your kids in the back seat, you can look up at the backing mirror to see them in some cases, can you imagine how many people would be reported in one trip only.

AT & T already had an app that blocks out texts coming in to a phone while the car was in motion, I believe a speed of 25-35 mph kicks it on, I think it is free. Although it was targeted for teens, it would work for anyone, including truckers. I would assume if AT& T has it, the other carriers also do.
So we already have the way to block text messaging without reinventing any other apps. It would just be a matter of doing it or having a built in block on cars that kick it on. The only thing is people would be trying to text from redlight to redlight I think. -
Yes you are absolutely correct when you say it wouldn't work. But the software could also be checking for the mirror viewer, so if the person looks up at the back up mirror or side mirrors or shoulder check the software wouldn't register. Sounds complicated but he computer can scan so many functions in a millisecond that it could be done. I don't think restricting peoples text messages over a certain speed is a werry good idea because people on trains, plains and ships all go over the speed. Cheers

Do truckers really text message that much I wonder? Or is it cars?

Hard to say, I have seen some horrific truck accidents that make no sense. How does a truck rearend someone? Not paying attention obviously or getting distracted looking at a GPS map, playing with the CD radio player or cell phones, oh and never mind the dog or cat that's on board. Maybe the budgee bird got out of the cage.Thousand and one ways to get distracted while driving, be careful out there.Cheers

Not only texts, but calls also. (We work with this at the Teen Driving school I work with.)
They already text red light to red light now, they just sit through a green light because they don't look up.piro Thanks this. -
Here in RCMP land the cops stand behind bus stops, telephone poles etc. and watch the people do their thing. I have been nabbed for not wearing a seat belt recently and got a stiff $167 dollar fine while they were out looking for texters and non-hands free drivers. Not fair I don't think since seat belts save lives not endanger them, but what do I know. I am taking it to court and I want to ask the judge to see the warrant to search the car. I feel that if the cop is looking in your windshield that he is indeed searching it and therefore needs a warrant to do so. Otherwise it could fall under illegal search rules. I know the cops have to have a reason to pull you over but to be looking in your private space inside the car is wrong. Now texters are distracted and can be charged with undue care and attention or dangerous driving, which contitutes a six month suspension of driving. Cheers
