honestly, bd 2 miles from delivery after dragging it from texas he should panic? since someone else mentioned the tractors with straps, supposed this had happened to you 2 miles from delivery? don't you think guy may very well have been in somewhat the same situation as you??? look at it that way perhaps. you had your moment and he has had his.

I can't see calling the DOT on any driver. From what I saw, the load was legal. It would have been better to have a light on the load, but he had a flag, which is likely all he needed. Lights may have been visible from the point of view from a 4 wheeler. With these types of loads, you can raise the rear of the steel to make it a little higher. It would have been better to have put the load on a 53' trailer, but not necessary. I hauled some sheet steel on a 53' trailer not long ago that was 57' long. I used risers or elevators, but the tail still moved up and down. The difference is that my load was 2 feet above the deck because I had a step deck.

 

We see bad loads all the time. And the Darwin winners are everywhere. The thing about the Darwin winners is they're going to rear end a truck whether its loaded, empty, rolling 55 mph or 70. They're going to find a way to die early.

Happens EVERY DAY of the year when the Darwin winners drive in close proximity of each other, be it truck, bus or 4 wheeler. I don't like those rolls of chain link fence, wrapped up on pallets and double stacked. Put 40 straps on the load and it's still going to shift.

Yes he does. I've refused to haul certain loads when I was a company driver. What are you gonna do...fire me? effyooenddye

Now, there have been numerous times where I've said something to drivers. But I'm not going to do like Pape said and hold someone's hand or play the highway watchdog and call company safety men. That's what the people who can't drive and can't make money driving do. I speak to the driver and leave it at that. Most will listen, some won't. Usually, the ones that won't listen get pinched in the very next scale. I loaded in Fargo and gone as far as the Morehead scale to see a driver that I just warned about his load getting the green and white regs book used in a bible thumping routine by a DOT. Well, I DID warn him.

Interesting thread. So this guy drives hundreds of miles essentially with no taillights. Then when asked about it, he shrugs it off. A further indication for his concern for safety. I doubt I'd want this guy working for me.

 

Im surprised a big co like CRST would take that kind of chance and liability

 

You guys can debate all you want about the do's and don't's but I'm sure we can all agree If you're going to haul something that ugly at least back it up against the fence.
