Im buying a 02 FLD120 with a 3406E CAT. the truck has been sitting for 2 years but started regularly, im driving it home 700miles. the pump is weak and the wheel is stiff im told by the owner. anybody have any idea what could be wrong besides the pump? if the pump is bad will it make it the 700 miles provided the seals hold? ive rarely seen a pump go bad after setting that short amount of time. and is it a belt driven pump on the 3406 or is it internal gear driven?
3406E power steering stiff , slow responding on 02 FLD120

Gear driven. Try changing the filter and the hoses before swapping out pumps. Lots of times old hoses collapse internally.
-
pumps very easy to change might be better to change it before you ride its on the drivers side almost right beside the steering box couple bolts and two lines your done
-
How do you know the pump is weak? Try jacking up the steer axle and greasing the king pins that probably haven't been greased in the two years.
Cetane+ Thanks this. -
I secound the king pins, also I would check the slip joint and universles on the steering shaft.
we had a slip joint get tight on are t2000 and the steering was stiff all the time but would get hard to turn then just stiff depending in what position it was in.
the pump may be bad but not likely. -
I picked up the truck, turns out the shaft seal went. I fixed it before i took it home, worked really well.

To check a pump you install a flow control valve, it has a restrictor in it to check the pressure output at a certain flow, the pumps are not very good and they will fail especially if you turn the wheels when the truck is stopped.

I see its still not as smooth, i assume its gonna be on its way out, anybody have an idea what a used or new pump cost? Im thinkin a bad or weak pump blew the seal on the box
-
To replace the seal, pop it out, you cap off the return hose and momentarily crank the engine, It is posible the seal was not installed properly, there is a proper tool for that job.
You do not want a used pump, no idea what it costs.
Just a thought! -
U are going to flip out when you price the pump. I believe it is over $350 if not more. That's why is say check the hoses and filter. Yes, do all of the greasing and steering shaft check. If those items check out, try the pressure hose. I had a situation where the steering felt stiff or would require more force than normal @ certain intervals within the turn. Never patterned, just whenever it felt like it. It was worse during backing to where I would throttle up just to get it to "unfreeze". Naturally, thought it was the pump. Changed the pump, yet it didn't fix the problem. Swapped the pressure hose, bam fixed it. Daaaaaaaaang! Ended up giving my buddy the old, yet still good pump. His steering was really really really not any good. That was about two years ago. It is still working fine.
