The guy in my company's safety department had me do an exercise where I plan and write (hypothetical) logs for the trip. My practice has always been to log off duty instead of sleeper berth whenever I take a 10 hour break. My reasoning is that there's no way to falsify "off duty" using receipts from a truck stop store, but if I log sleeper berth and forget to change status when I go inside, I could get a log violation.
Anyway, he told me that it wouldn't count as a break unless I either logged 8 hours of sleeper berth, or could produce a receipt for a hotel stay. Is this true? Do I have to start logging actual sleeper berth time in order to avoid a violation?

I don't think he is right. I mean what if you spend 5 hours watching tv in drivers lounge? In order to be legal you would have to do 13 off/sb? No don't think so.
So what about when you do a 10 hr break at home? How would you prove that without a receipt?Cetane+ Thanks this. -
The only time I need to log in the sleeper line 2 is if doing an 8 and 2 split, as the 8 has to be in the sleeper, or any split break of 8 to less than 10 has to have 8 in the sleeper, that may be confusing it.
10 hrs or more off duty time satisfies the off duty requirement. Same with a 34 hour reset. -
If you're in the sleeper then you log line 2.One day an officer may ask you why you never log sleeper and want to see your hotel receipts. An Illinois dot questioned me one time.I told him I stayed at a friends house. If youre on 2 and forget to log line one and go inside trk stop,so what, very much doubt a dot is right there waiting to give you a violateion.Just don't forget to log pretrip before starting your day.Youre in the sleeper then log 8 hrs or so then log line 1 for and hr then pretrip.

I always log it as sleeper birth because if dot pulls you over they are going to want to know when you slept. Want to see a hotel receipt or proof you slept during that time. You do not have to log if you go into truck stop and go bathroom and eat. Etc.

He wasn't in the bunk?? He was parked across the lot waiting for an easy target. My point to buckeye is if you leave truck it is off, in the sleeper it is sb and in front seat it is od/nd.

That is what my company told me.
