Hello everyone. I'm just about to finish phase 1 of orientation here in Marshfield and wanted to say it's been a great experience and I've learned a great deal more here than in truck driving school. The instructors here have been very professional and do a great job teaching. My official hire date is Monday and I can't wait to meet my trainer for phase 2. If anyone has any questions about phase 1 I'll try and answer the best I can. So far Roehl has been great and I feel confident I made the right call by going with them.

What are the phases like? How much time in each phase?

That's really great to hear. Many safe miles to you.

Best of luck to you as you start your journey with Roehl. They are a good company.

Phase 1 is 8 days. First few days in the classroom with a mixture of presentations and learning how to read a map etc. Next three days is driving and doing pre trip's. The weekend we did backing and close quarters maneuvers. Friday is when your instructor will do your driving skills evaluation. It's been a great experience and I've learned alot. Phase 2 is when you go over the road for 9-13 days with a trainer. That's the part I'm about to go in to and I'll go into how it goes when I go out with my trainer.

That's awesome. I might be going to Roehl. What does the driving skills evaluation consist of? Are the trucks Manuals or Automatics? Thanks.

Your driving skills test is a lot like the test you took to get your CDL. You will drive around town making turns and changing lanes, and all the common stuff, they usually will just have you tell them your mountain grade, and emergency stopping procedures, usually they will ask you this as your coming back into the terminal, to head down to the range and finish up the test with backing into the hole, preforming the "45" back, and that's it. 98% of the trucks are 10 speed manual transmissions. They have just a few automatics that they have acquired through the buyout of other companies, but they usually cant find many drivers who will agree to drive them, and they are sitting in the yards

Thanks for the information. No one wants the automatics? Interesting. I have a friend who drives (for a different company) an automatic Volvo and loves it.

Finished Phase 2 with my trainer yesterday and tested out this morning. Great experience and I learned alot from him. Waiting on my fleet manager to get back with me with a truck assignment and I'm heading home with a load for some much needed home time.

Congratulations!
Looks like it's time to change your status from student to 0-1 years.
