Hi all I'm a recent graduate strongly considering driving for Roehl in their national flatbed division. Only thing is, the deal they offered me is different that everything else I've heard. They said since I'm out of FL, they will fly me out to Gary, and I'd run out of Gary for three weeks, then they'd fly me home for a week. I made sure to ask if this was just for training or ongoing, and they said this would be how it goes even after training.
Anybody else have experience with this sort of deal? My main concern is that they're going to do slip seating and I won't be able to have the same amenities in the cab, since it would be limited to what I can bring on a plane twice a month.
Been reading up on everyone's experiences here and I like what I've heard, but haven't heard anything about this.

I don't work for Roehl, but I've never heard of any trucking company doing anything even remotely similar to that. Why wouldn't they just get you a load going to FL for your home time? Sounds fishy to me.

Florida is known for not having great freight. They may not have any freight coming out so it cheaper to fly you down then dead head your truck out. Also if you got a load home your truck would be stopped for a week. I havnt heard fo this, but im guessing they just slip seat the trucks to keep um moving and avoid Florida do to no loads coming out.

Thanks for the replies thus far, yeah they said it's because they need more flatbed drivers in the MW and NE, and that they're otherwise not hiring in my area (outside of Tampa, FL). I think I might see if I can talk to a different recruiter from them to see if it's really my only option.

Only 2 other flatbedders out of FL that don't work here anymore, they had to stay out for 3 weeks to a month minimum. They were based out of palatka and Jacksonville. In my opinion from what I've heard no flatbed freight for Roehl as a company in FL. Maybe a load or two for people that don't live there but to consistantly get a FL driver home for them is hard. What part of FL you live? I've seen craigslist ads for hometime fleet and national for van. The reason Gary is that's where securement training is for the company for flatbedders. Sounds fishy but considering deadhead miles to and from home so you could have a decent hometime could be cheaper to fly than spend all money on fueling empty miles. Could be desperate for flatbedders for the MW and NE region idk.

Yeah I'm out of Dade City, FL, about 30 miles north of Tampa on I-75. To be honest I don't have much tying me down to FL so after six months or so I might be relocating out west (where my heart is) and looking for another job anyhow. At the moment though I have to take what I can get and just make the best of it. It sounds like a desperation move on their part, but I've heard good things about Roehl in general so I might just give it a shot. And if they have enough freight to be making offers like this then business must be good lol.

I have heard at least one other driver considering Roehl who mentioned this exact same offer / arrangement, a month or two ago, so I think it's legit. Generally I'd say that if you got that info directly from a Roehl recruiter, it is most probably legit.
BTW, Gary is sorta the center of the universe for flatbed freight, so it makes some amount of sense that they'd fly you into there -- you're guaranteed to have loads to and from there. There's an incredible amount of all kinds of freight that passes through the Gary area. -
Get it in writing that your flown out/home and then jump on it, what other company is gonna put you in a plane twice a month on them? Enjoy it, especially if your getting the miles while your out. I'm going with them also but van out of upper michigan.

We have west coast terminals as well depending on where your moving to in the future. One in Phoenix and one in Fontana

Thanks for the help, everybody. I decided to go for it and just got my offer of employment today. I'll be flying out on the 25th to start training, I'm excited! Now I just need to worry about keeping warm up there.
