CH & TQL seem to be cut from the same cloth, but they exist and are successful because there are carriers that take their freight. I seldom answer the phone when they call, to say I wont haul for them is a lie, but not at most of the rates they offer.
Signing up with CHR...

I know because he calls them 'highway robbers' and to me that says that he doesnt have proper negotiating techniques, which IS a big part of an independant owner operators business. I may have over-exagerated when saying that he is clueless to running his business, but I feel there may be alot of room for improvement. How often does it happen that the weights are inaccurate and load/unload points are a distance away?

We've always had a decent relationship with CHR. Yes, in the beginning, they'll try to be a little tight on their counter-offers on your rate bids, but as time goes along, they really DO notice the carriers who provide not just excellent performance on the road, but also maintain a good attitude, and professionalism. We try hard to "service the account" as though it is the only one we have. Treating their call-takers with respect, keeping their agents in "the loop" when it comes to load status, as well as periodic follow-up with the agents to see where we can improve our service to them, are all attributes we've noticed that they are concerned with. Under-promise and over-deliver, every time, all the time. As a result, our CHR loads have been decent, and abundant.
Good luck OP.rollin coal Thanks this. -
Thank you! This is my plan to be successful with these guys. I have learned that the hard work comes first and the rewards later. I have a plan in place that has been proven lots in the past to get to the top sooner then later and I cant wait to get going. Im just waiting for them to send me my sign on package from the branch in Calgary that I talked to yesterday. I am already signed up with LS, just waiting for this and will be rollin by the weekend!

I used to haul many loads for CHR. You will get this. Wrong addresses, loads that need to be tarped because the sales man got a bump in the shipping price for stuff that doesn't need tarping. A T number so you info will go into. A database that you will HAVE to give before you hear a price.
I had one that claimed the freight was damaged after I left and then filed on insurance money for it, guess what, they sold the "damaged product" anyway.
CHR isn't the best broker to deal with.

Don't assume until you know the story. When I delt with them I was driving someone else's truck. Rate confirmations wouldn't match the agreed amount after negotiation, loads tend to weight more than they say, tarping rates would be short. Spoke with them one time about a load that was agreed upon and got the rate and it was the same as the board showed. Called back and was told it was what they agreed. Asked the guy if he suffered from CRS syndrome because we had discussed and agreed on a higher paying rate because the current rate on the board wouldn't even let the truck break even. "Well this rate you agreed to confirm on isn't what you said it was. Well I'm not going to change it"! *Click* On several occasions I've been called in to the yard to go pick up a load. When I get their they, had canceled the load then didn't want to pay for a truck not used after holding it. Then go back to looking for another load. Call and negotiate the rate then never get another response back from the agent working it. Now as an O/O I took the smart route and just avoid them and now have two customers that I deal with directly locally in my area for out going loads and doing well by doing so. The rest are brokered loads through various live boards. So far being on my own I haven't had any issues such as stated about TQL and C.H.R. TQL got on my nerves for constantly blowing up my phone for check calls when I did run a load through them for my employer and kept asking my ETA and location many times a day to the point of aggravation when I would be way ahead of schedule and still deliver early. Guess they expected the truck to grow wings and fly across the country in 11 hours. I haven't made mistakes but I have learned first hand from others. As for C.H.R, I didn't run but a few loads for them during my employment at my previous job but every time in contact with an agent, they were always rude. Lesson learned before mistake was made. What the truck would gross and my check at the end of the week counted on getting good loads so it was some of my responsibility to help make sure that happened and through those two companies, it wouldn't.
ABtrucker is right that they do have loads and pay on time but they are shady with the rate confirmations but added at least in my case tend to be rude a lot. I'll just avoid the BS altogether and simply not deal with them and I'll stay happy.Last edited: Nov 12, 2013
6wheeler Thanks this. -
I find that odd. I haul probably 3 dozen loads or more a year with CHR and never once has a rate confirmation sent over to me not been what I negotiated over the phone or via email. Never have any of those other problems either. I find their info and loads to always be a breeze for the most part. I actually prefer to do business with them.
