Hi ,
I've got a 1989 Fld120 that I am trying to restore in the UK and am trying to get some information .
It has a cat 3176 2YG engine that turns over but doesn't fire
a) Is it entirely a 12 volt system ?
b) How do I read off engine fault codes ?
c) I've e-mailed several dealers in the US but none have replied . Does anyone know of a good dealer where I can buy spares from ?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Jon

freightliner. and yes the 120 is 12volt system it may also be new enough where it is drive by wire. if it's not firing. try a little starting fluid in the breather. if it fires. then it's a fuel problem. which means you have a leak some where in the lines. if it doesn't fire. then it could be an electrical problem. if it's an old mechanical engine. it could be the fuel pump. there are several vendors other then dealers that ship world wide. one is in Terre haute, indiana, there is another in or around Louisville, kentucky. then there are several parts re builders in the u.s. that can help you. then important thing to remember. freight liner is the truck. Caterpillar is another company completely. so you will need the engine serial number or the Vin number off the cab.

Thanks for that , it is fly by wire . I believe that somebody has connected batteries up wrong ( ie 24 volts ) and am beginning to think that the ecm is probably blown and will either require repairing or replacing
|Do you know the name of the vendor in terre haute ?Last edited: Nov 13, 2013

I remember the trucks there being 24volt, so that is not too surprising really.
I can get parts and ship them to you if need be, just beware that shipping will be a costly venture, so choose wisely!
I also dont mind handling any used parts if you need me to.
Martinbigshow177 Thanks this. -
Thanks for that Martin. There are a couple of bits i need but i'm assuming that it would be better to bulk up and pay one lot of shipping .Still trying to find out how to read fault codes if anyone has any ideas. I've started tracing/checking wiring looms one by one ( slow but i need to be sure )

I bought a scanner for trucks, works perfectly.
OTC 3418 is the make/model.
