Detroit series 60. Turns over great. But takes 5-10, longer when it's cold out, before it starts to "fire", and even once it begins to hit, it stumbles, while holding the key to crank, before it actually fires up and runs on its own. I'm not too familiar with this yr engine, could it be something like the tps (?) sensor to signify timing? Or is it just losing prime? I've taken the fuel filter out, cleaned the housing, checked the check all and spring seems to be fine. Replaced the filter. After a day of running the filter/fuel looks grey/black. I'm almost out of ideas. It does show codes when the override switch is hit, but don't know what any of the flash codes mean. Any ideas?
05 freightliner losing prime? Or..

The filter looks black? Do you have alge growing in the tanks?
outside temp when started?
could be the hand primer -
If your fuel is getting black you could have compression gases getting into fuel.
-
your fuel ck. valve is bad, 85$ part at drivers side fuel return line, rear of eng.
112racing Thanks this. -
Like smellfunny said, look in your fuel tanks. If the fuel is black with no algae youre getting compression in the fuel. Do you have any fuel in the coolant? If so I would change all 6 injector cups and injector o rings. If there is no fuel in the coolant, I would remove all 6 injectors and re-ring all six injectors

Also, if you have fuel shut off valves on top of the trans, you may want to make sure they are dry and not leaking

a bad fuel line, allowing air in the sys could be the prob. the fuel back check, I would say prob not bad. if IT were bad it would be hard to start in any weather not just cold. (though it could be leaking back). the warmer weather keeps pressure in the fuel sys allowing better starts. I had exact same symptoms. thought it was an injector leaking down, or a number of other things. plugging truck up would make a world of difference. I replaced all my fuel lines. they can suck air & you cannot tell which one, or ones, are bad. changing my trs & srs sensors changed nothing. fuel lines can deteriorate from the inside & clog in area's you'll never see. not saying that is your problem. mine would be hard to start in cold, then stumble, smoke sputter, then smooth out after 5 8 seconds. and ONLY in cold temp.

I looked in tanks the tanks. Theres black on the sides and tubes. But not on the bottom. Is there a way to test injector leak down? My fuel lpnes almost look like an air line, all fittings are tight and don't appear to be leaking.n.

put return line in bucket look for bubbles from compression.

With it being a Freightliner, take a flashlight and look into the tank, there are two pipes in the tank, front section, one is suction one return, if you get a big gulp of air it is draining back, if after it starts it is blowing a lot of fine bubbles, then it has compression leaking past the injectors, Possible stretched hold down bolt. they all would need to be removed and new washers install, and new Ò`rings.
I have never changed a return check valve, and I specialised in engines.
Just a thought!
