I am 32yrs old and just had VATS surgery to remove half my lung during this surgery doctor noticed I have a heart murmur. As of right now I can't drive for 6 months because of the surgery I might lose O2 and pass out. But in 6 month will this heart murmur keep me from driving. I have passed all my physicals in the past and nobody ever mentioned a heart murmur and never had no issues. This surgery I had was a emergency surgery they called it Iraq/Afghanistan war lung and it turned into cancer with some other issues requiring the removal of my lung.

I am worried about this as I just got a new truck and my authority and was about to go out on my own when this happened now I have a truck and trailer sitting idle and spent a lot of money to get to this point.

Don't know about the heart thing. But with your limited lung capacity I'd think you should stick to the Southeast Region if you live in Florida like your avatar shows. Or even stay in Florida and do ports. Avoiding the Higher elevations with the thinner air must be considered seriously I would think. Good luck to ya.

That was kinda what I was thinking I think I might have issues with the mountains. I don't know much about ports I was thinking maybe CH Robinson could keep me in a 4-5 state area thoe. This surgery is becoming a big problem I think this might just end my career as a driver.

There's two kinds of heart murmurs, innocent and abnormal. The majority are innocent and no cause for concern. One can have normal physical activity. If you were older it might be a sign of a heart valve problem. If it was abnormal they would of found it when you were a child. I would follow up with a cardiologist or at least see what your primary care doctor says. They might do an EKG and a stress test. But I doubt it's a concern as far as driving unless you need a heart valve replacement. I would have a letter from one of the doctors stating it's not a problem (normal EKG) when you take a physical.

As far as the lung you are still fairly young. I don't even think that would be a problem. If the surgery went fine you should be able to resume normal activity. My neighbor's boy has one lung. He just got a baseball scholarship to college and is very active. It doesn't slow him down one bit.

Unless there is surgery complications once healed there is nothing in the medical guidelines to keep you from driving.

Thanks for the info it's good to know I might be able to keep driving. I got a lot of money invested and tied up and if I cant recoup it that's a big loss. It was a lot of work becoming a approved carrier for Tyson, Hurshey's, US.Army, Pepsi and a few others if I lost these contracts I don't know what I would do.
