I am on electronic logs. I remain off duty while doing a pre trip. If there is something I need to do to the truck, I am not going to start the day and burn up 45 minutes doing what I need to do to repair a light or whatever. When I know that things are good to go, I hit the on duty pre trip and then go fill my thermos, fuel, or do whatever little things to tick off roughly 8-10 minutes and then take off. Hardly ever more than 15 minutes. As far as Post trips, the minute I stop for the day, I hit the on duty post trip. Let it tick off 8-10 minutes then go to off duty or sleeper. Again, hardly ever hit 15 minutes on the e-log. I may be actually doing something like greasing my truck and giving it a serious go over, but I am not going to actually burn up time on the e-logs while I am doing it. I know, I know.... for the purists and anal compulsive crowd, this all is not per the actual rules. So what? Was the same with paper.

Hey Eaton.... I have been out of the truck for over a week while the truck is in the shop... and I couldn't verify with my Peoplenet I wrote everything right. I found here instructions I received from my co. on how to log pre and post trip inspections with Peoplenet and typed here for you.
Plz remember that in my co. we show at least 10 mins for pre trip and only flag post trip.

    Pre Trip Inspections

    Duty Status
    On Duty

    Inspection (Hat Guy)
    Pre
    Type "Start" & Press Done

Complete Inspection of Tractor & Trailer

    Create Form
    DVIR, Complete & Send

    Inspection (Hat Guy)
    Pre
    Type "End" & Press Done

Then you can manually change your duty status or begin driving.

    Post Trip Inspections

    Duty Status
    On Duty

    Inspection (Hat Guy)
    Post
    Type "Start/End" & Press Done

Then you can manually change your duty status to off duty or sleeper.
