I've been told the straps are not supposed to be outside the rails but never seen the actual rule. Though I do find it sloppy.
But I wouldn't think twice about putting my bungees outside the rail.
I've been told by Contasgo, that the law allows even securement devices outside of the rail, just not freight. -
the deal with straps outside the rail was rescinded back in 2006, but the mercer man wants em inside the rails.Giggles the Original, Grumppy and Flightline Thank this.

Hmm..if freight can't go beyond the rails: (easiest example) units of lumber are sometimes 50" wide; does that mean that you can't load them on a 96" trailer? I've put more than a few 102" loads on a 96". Not saying I love the look, I justified legality to myself and haven't been stopped for it...shippers don't always tell you product overall width on commodity freight.

wrong...they used to be allowed....now they must be inside rubrail
-
i stand corrected then, if the above statement is true....LOL -
That cop must eat lunch at the counter at the truckstop. That's where he learned that li'l tidbit. -
You can have them inside or outside the rails no law says you can't go outside. My trailers are aluminum if you run them outside the rails you'll bend them up fast, I've owned trailers without rails before but they don't call it a rub rail for nothing!!!

I really hate the sticky topics but maybe we need one so this topic doesnt get debated 1,000,000 more times. The heading could be: Straps outside the rub rail are OK. You can do it no further debate needed.

^ I fully agree with MJ1657. I'm still curious about freight over the sides...as long as it isn't over legal width does it matter if its over trailer width?
MJ1657 Thanks this.
