I dont understand taking a pay cut to drive otr. I did have my own truck, but I made awesome money driving otr. I had to take a pay cut to stay local, but my wife and I now have two babies and I need to be home just as much as I need the money.Shaggy Thanks this. -
Yeah, I think that is about the going rate here. I'm done considering it since the experience doesn't transfer.
-
What I meant by that was - I have my own business and I make more money now than I could hope to make OTR. I wasn't saying there wasn't good money in trucking and I hope I didn't come across that way. I'm loving everything I'm learning about trucking and I kind of with I could make the jump now rather than waiting, but family circumstances won't allow yet.

Please define awesome money doing OTR take home pay each week. Hours worked / take home $.
5 years in. I hope you bring in at least $1200 net a week. 60/40 hours and 20 hrs of OT is very possible to make..Last edited: Nov 23, 2013

net actually between 1800 and 2000 a week, after expense. Got a really good deal on a truck, but fuel is by far your largest expense, about 70 gallons a day on average and worked about 5 and a half days a weekShaggy Thanks this. -
good for you. no sarcasm.
In the end, make same as a door slammer for a local ABC outfit.
trucking is either a JOB or a Lifestyle. hard to define anything. we are all different

I dont know, but I think an annual take home between 90 to 100k a year is pretty good no matter what type of small business you are operating, I have a lot of friends with a degree, and also friends that have businesses with 15 to 20 employees that dont make that much, and I have a relatively small investment -
That's pretty good. Once I get going - after I'm done in someone elses truck and I'm O/O - I would like to make at least 5k per month. This outside of expenses, equipment replacement fund and maintenance fund. I hope that is doable without working crazy hours - I want to enjoy the life and see the country. I'm going to work hard enough to be successful - anything less would unacceptable to myself. But... I will leave the chase for every last dollar to others

I have never heard of a company that does not consider local T/T work as experience. Many will advertise they want 6 mos or 1 year OTR because they want drivers that aree acclimated to the lifestyle. I imagine some local drivers would leave after a short time, because of the away time and the lifesyle, but I know several local drivers including myself, that have gone OTR with no problem.
Sometimes a company will require a local driver to spend weeks with a trainer, where a recent OTR may just need indoc or a trip or two under their belt. Sometimes just a conversation that ensures the employer that the driver understands and is willing to live with the lifestyle of OTR, but T/T expeience is counted whether local or OTR in any company I have spoken to. And because I am relocating I have unfortunately had to speak with quite a few lately.Shaggy Thanks this.
