Hello,
I am taking Zolpidem(generic Ambien) for sleeping. It is prescribed by my doctor, follow correct dosage, and I use no other drugs. Will this pass the DOT physical drug screen? Most of what I've read is it would not show up, however I'm not sure
whether to say anything or not really. I'm going to go through a technical college to get my CDL training and my class starts in January. I plan on having the physical and drug screen done in about a month, just before class starts. Even if it passes
the DOT screen, what about individual trucking company drug screens? I've thought about just not taking any about A week or so before my test, or see if my doctor can put me on something else and just stop taking them all together now. Any info would be useful.

As long as you have the script with your name on it from a real doctor you will be fine. You must list it on the paperwork before you test.

I believe it is a controlled substance similar to Percocet in as much as it is habit forming. In Florida, it can only be prescribed with a written script. The doctor cannot fax it in. With this in mind, as well as the possible side effects, I think you can pretty much be sure it will show up on a drug test. I could be wrong, but I'd bet I'm not. Lets see what others say about it.

Ditch the Ambien, and switch to melatonin. Its naturally produced by your body, and if you take the pill, it'll never show up. Non habit forming, and found otc in the vitamin section. Try the 5mg first, if it doesnt make u tired, take another. You wont od, lol. It usually works in about 20 min.
LloydToo Thanks this. -
Ambien won't show on a drug screen, it is not a narcotic or in anyway similar to one. It is not habit forming in the sense that you become addicted physically to it either, you can however get to the point where it is hard to sleep without it. I took it for a while a few years ago myself and had to quit due to "sleep wheelying" my KTM MX race bike up and down the block at 3am... At least that's what the wife and neighbors told me I was doing, I do not remember doing it and always woke feeling well rested. So following that logic, and the fact that alot folks on it do some weird things while they are asleep I quit using it. As long as you have been OK on it then it should not be an issue, I have friends that drive and take it daily.

Use the forum search feature above and type in "Ambien". We had this question a few weeks ago.
Long story short it's not on the list of disqualifying drugs. But truckers have to wake up at a moment's notice sometimes. You don't need something that will make you late for an appointment at 4 am because you couldn't get up.
You'll be tired plenty enough working long hours at different schedules you won't need anything to fall asleep. All you need is a pillow and blanket! -
ok, appreciate the info, yes it is from a "real" doctor and i use it as i'm prescribed to, and it's the only drug i take, legal or otherwise. So i'm not sweating anything else at all. @CondoCruiser, you said that it's not on a list of disqualifying drugs assuming you mean the DOT screen test, would that be the case for individual trucking companies drug screens as well? I mean is that how it works?

Ambien is a no no. They'll not let you drive with it.
