Give the closest terminal a call and ask for a meeting with the terminal manager. I will say this time of year is the slow time and they don't hire as many people. It's terminal specific. They hire when they need people. We don't have hundreds of empty trucks sitting around.
Best time to get hired on is late winter into spring. That is when they start getting more loads than they can handle. You might want to private message a guy on here posting as Twicebit. He recently got hired on and jumped through the hoops. I think they made him go to an approved school as his experience wasn't recent.
In Columbus you might be a little far from a terminal. They want you close enough to commute. The trucks don't go home.

I got ahold of the cincinati terminal and they said columbus wouldnt be a problem and that they would take me if everything checks out. So as soon as i get yanked out of the mud im stuck in i can deliver in austin tx and get some home time:/ So ill fill out an app for superior. If everything goes well and if not worst they can say is no. At least the way i see it.

I headed out about 6 AM Monday morning for Plaquemine. I decided to leave a little early and stop about 70 miles short of where I normally take my 10 so I could catch the Monday night Panther-Patriot game. I stopped at Wind Creek Casino at exit 54 on I-65. I got there about 4:30 PM and immediately set my alarm for 8:15 PM and grabbed a 3.5 hour nap since the game wouldn't end until 11:30 or so and I had to hit the road around 3 AM to make my load appointment.
The game was great. Being Alabama there were a bunch of Cam Newton fans and a couple of patriot fans. The casino wasn't the best place to watch the game. They had the sound turned down so you had to read subtitles on the screen to know what the announcers said. It was better than trying to get a bunch of drivers to change the channel off of CSI in a truck stop TV room though. Free soda and snacks was a plus as well.
I felt pretty good heading out the next morning even though my 7 hours of sleep was split into 2 3-4 hour blocks. I got to Plaquemine only to have my trailer rejected for too much moisture. Fortunately they took me right into a bay at the Transport Service terminal/tankwash so it was only about a 3 hour delay. I still had plenty of time to make the delivery Thursday morning but the load delay coupled with not running as far Monday meant a 3rd night out on the road. I normally run these to the terminal, go home and deliver them the next day if they don't have a local guy deliver it.
I got the load dropped in on time Thursday and was home by noon. I am heading out early Sunday morning for a live load at 6 AM Monday in N Chicago. That load will be dropped on the yard Tuesday since I am taking a vacation day Wednesday to prep for a house full of family on Thanksgiving day.
Going to cook 2 Turkeys one on the smoker and a spicy one on the infrared oil less fryer. Before I started trucking this was a family tradition for about 10 years. Its been 6 years since we have done it since I have volunteered to run the holiday and more often than not been on a west coast trip. With my Father in law passing away and my wife getting cancer this year I have decided that the extra money just isn't worth it.Last edited: Nov 23, 2013

I imagine you can get them anywhere, but I know that if you go to the bar at the Wind Creek, the bartender will make you a chocolate milkshake that is incredible.

Headed out at around 4:30 AM Sunday morning and had an uneventful trip up and back to N Chicago. Other than a nasty drive back on the WV turnpike through a bunch of rain it went well. I am just glad it was 33F and just wet. Got back on the yard around 5PM after dropping the load at the customer. I left a couple of hours later than normal since I was told I would drop the load on the yard, wasn't pushed for time and the winter storm warnings expired by noon through the mountains.
I am off at least until Tuesday maybe longer. My truck has been throwing a check engine code for the ERG cooler. Its a dealer repair so my truck went into the shop today. They probably won't start on it before Monday. I can use a few more days off. Going to the Panther game with my son on Sunday before he heads back to school.
Got 2 turkeys in brine at the moment. Going to smoke one with a traditional rub and cook the second one on my oil less fryer with a spicy Cajun rub. Going to have a house full tomorrow.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone -
