I am new to this forum and found it because I wanted to run an idea past drivers and see what kind of feedback I get. I will try to be short and to the point.

I am 41 years old and have been around the trucking industry all of my life. My father is a retired teamster and I have a good grasp on not only how things are now but how things used to be, even in the days long before my time. I have heard two things continually since I was a young boy and the only difference between me and most other drivers is that I only believe one of them. The two things are as follows:

    1. The trucking industry has more power than even the federal government.

    2. You will never get truck drivers to stick together to get anything done.

I whole heartedly believe number 1, and refuse to believe number 2. I think the idea has never been approached in the right manner. The first problem is that the only thing you ever hear is "shut down" which has huge problems right off the bat. People have lives, families to feed and bills to pay, they can't just say "I ain't going to work next week". The second big problem is when they start making waves, they very likely won't be going to work the next week either, because they will be fired.

The solution goes something like this and please remember that I am looking for help and suggestions.

    1. You first have to define a cause such as fuel prices and NAFTA.

    2. You set up a web site so truckers can get information and the general public can go there to see what all the fuss is about.

    3. You designate a phone number and have a good spokesman in place to respond to the media, politicians, or whoever is inclined to call.

    4. You set dates that trucks will run in large convoys all across the country. I haven't figured out all the details on this yet, but if you could get trucks running at or just above the minimum speed of 45 mph, the trucks that are running 70 will catch up and join in and before you know it, you have 20 miles worth of trucks running the granny lane on every interstate highway in the country.

These large convoys would draw big attention from everyone including the media and when the media started checking the website or calling the spokesman, the demands could be presented to the government. This being a presidential election year offers a great chance for the spokesman to demand a face to face meeting with each candidate for president and enough attention would even get a meeting or series of meetings with members of the house and senate.

Nobody loses pay or thier job and in the end you not only show the country that truck drivers are unified, but you prove to the drivers that they are unified. Driver moral will skyrocket, and we might just get back to the good ole days when truck drivers were like brothers.

Let me know what you think and any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I like this forum and wish I had found it sooner.

American Truckers are by far the COOLIST folks I have EVER known,,Period. My life is 100% proof positive of this fact..

Thats a Hell'ova fist post roadtrip66.In early 90's the TV News crews were in the T/S parking lots and drivers were interviewd about the high fuel.We (non-union) convoyed our butts-off protesting outlawing our bird dogs.Shutdown 93 (also nonunion) went very well.94 shutdown was pathetic (results wise). To No availe.

My dad died.I do NOT see the brotherhood,in this skeleton crew, runnin the rodes nowdaze.Dad alway wanted better for me,told me to "think outside the box". I Believe in A #3

I thought a convoy is illegal....

Well for what it is worth they had a segment last night on the local news. Showed a truck fueling and went something like this "you think it cost a lot to fill your car? how about this (showed $500 on the pump) it cost these guys $500 to fuel up... How does that effect you? we will tell you at 11"
So, the moral of the story is unless you can show people how they are effected (non truck drivers) nobody is going to give a crap... Even then it's going to be almost impossible to keep people interested on the issue becuase peoples attention span nowadays is almost non existent..

The only way to really get things done is threw the goverment.. And that takes BIG BIG dollars to get a few people in your back pocket... That's how America works now..

There is no chance of an organized, unified, trucker's protest action occurring. Period!

To start, the industry is fragmented, and each segment has their own goals and ambitions. We've got TL, LTL, dedicated, store door, line-haul, bulk, over dimensioned, regional, OTR, owner/operators, private carriers, mega-carriers, and, last but not least, chicken haulers. Two drivers can't decide where to stop for coffee, much less anything really important.

Then, and this is important to note, the mega fleets want it all and are planning on having just that. Sure, they may give the high fuel prices some lip service, but, in reality, they can buy fuel in million gallon (or more) quantities at tremendous discounts. The smaller fleets, and owner/operators pay what the pump says. There's a big advantage for the mega fleets and they are keeping the rates low, and, getting their fuel discounts while they sit back and watch the little guys go bust, one after the other. Couple that with discounts on buying fleets of equipment, embracing intermodal, and depressing labor cost so the little man can't compete in the market. The extreme fuel prices are a boom for the mega-carriers because it is sending their competitors into bankruptcy, fast.

Oh! If one of their ATA cronies gets into a bind there will be a merger, or buy-out. In the end, the ATA fleet remains as strong as ever.

Not happy with uncompensated waiting time, or, are the no idle laws causing you discomfort? Well, don't complain too loudly because there are workers who have already demonstrated their willingness to do "the jobs Americans won't do", and, do it cheaper. Again, the ATA mega-fleets are ready, waiting, and hoping we all get fed up enough to quit. That'll save 'em a bundle when Pedro climbs into a refurbished cab-over with no A/C or other creature comforts.

It ain't lookin' good. Hang on to your billfolds and cross train quickly. I've heard we could use some good politicians.

Lets see, I fueled up my pickup this morning at $3.15/gal for regular unleaded. At the same stop, diesel was running $3.91/gal.

Yesterday I received a USPS package which weighed less than 5 lbs. It cost $15 (well, $14 and change) to ship it from Illinois.

Don't need to convince me that high fuel prices affect me. Just two years ago I was paying half as much.

Supply is less than demand. Simple economics. Increase supply, the price goes down... but that doesn't benefit big oil, so why bother?

So... what can *I* do? Stop driving? You're not going to get truckers to do that, let alone Ms. Soccer Mom.

When I was coming back up the I45 from Houston last night, the radio was abuzz w/ drivers talking about the shut down. I'm 2 miles from the train at home and 3 miles from train at work and I own a bicycle. If we're going to stick it to the man, let me know when and I'll take the train instead. :)
