Good day to you all.
I did 16 years in the USMC (infantry) plus a few years in the middle as a civilian doing all kinds of jobs. Left earlier this year, and with an eye on the oil field stories got myself a cdl. Ended up where I am now driving for Shaffer. Still pretty interested in the oil fields. Would like to go up there for a while and eventually get back into OTR. Also very interested in flatbed. Workaholic and as a jar head I certainly learned how to "suffer well".

Move over to Hunt for flat. North Dakota oil fields should be an adequate challenge.
GSOK Thanks this. -
Thank you sir. I've been looking at Hunt. Of course they require a year of experience (drats). As far as the oilfields, good phrasing because I love a challenge! Like doing physical stuff, getting a bit or a lot dirty. I'm very glad I did some research here on these forums though as it helped me avoid falling for the sales pitch of a 1099 company. When the guy said I needed to get set up a self employed and that they didn't use logbooks it tripped my internal bs alarms....

Is that a good company for those who are beginners in trucking?
-
I am with Crete and they only take students from certain schools. I honestly dont know if the sister companies Shaffer and Hunt take students?
-
Yes, I was a student hire at shaffer. But hunt requires a year of otr experience.
xlsdraw Thanks this. -
Do you know what the average load length is at Shaffer? It's mid 600s at Crete.

I've had a few great long runs thanks to my excellent asset manager. Apart from that everything seems to be 400-500 miles. Lot of sitting around at the customer and a lot of overhead non driving time eating up my 14. And a few approximately 200 mile runs that just plain sucked, haha.

I should try to visit those company if I already trained on some trucking school. Thanks for sharing those company name here.
