Might be a blessing disguised. Can't say I would buy a rental truck, unless it is deeply discounted.

I used to work for Penske Truck leasing. Every decision about the truck is made with the idea of them making a profit. Maintenance is done cheaply as possible knowing they are going to sell the truck at a certain point for a certain residual value. They sell the truck in good enough condition not to provoke a lawsuit but that is all.
If you get a unit that was on permanent lease(one customer) who likely assigned the truck to one or two drivers, you might have a shot at getting a decent unit. Penske saves those units and bundles them in groups to dealers. The ones you see in standard livery, white(Ryder) or yellow(Penske) are in the rental fleet. If you buy them dirt cheap and expect to fix almost everything you might come out.

You could look into Lone Mountain Leasing if that would help, I know with Ryder that you can talk them down a lot, I know of a driver that got 10 grand off his truck from Ryder, ya it had problems after he bought it, but it's a used truck.......

I really had good luck from my ryder trucks, The PM are done at 20,000-25,000 some sooner than that my trucks come from the same company and they leased them new so it was like a one owner truck. All them had recaps that were junk they needed shocks and spring bushings but other than that were #### good trucks got mine at 630,00-640,000 and drove them up to 950,000 miles never pulled the valve cover off anyone of them or pulled tranny, trucks i had were 2006 and all had EGR problems one truck we never fixed all did around 5.80mpg.

Ryder will fix anything your not happy with they painted the front of one truck after i paid for it but never had a issue within the first year all i did was drive them.

Would i buy another one from them yes i would i also got the trucks for $8,000 less than they were asking the price they give you is with the warranty tell them keep it....

Also one more thing they said my truck was 455hp and was set at 370hp and had a speed limiter on it make sure you get the passcode to unlock the ecm or have them do it

I wouldnt suggest getting a rental truck. We have two Penske internationals where Im at and they are junk. The service shops are jokes, We have had truck go to PM's an have had to send the truck back because either the truck didnt get a full PM or they broke more stuff then they fixed. For example one of trucks came back from a PM and when it was parked there was oil covering the inner fender, fuel tank, quarter fender, etc because they didnt tighten the dip stick down. That as happened four other times. Another issue was that one of the trucks went in for an alinement and they put the steering back together with the steering wheel backwards. Their are two types of PM's also. One is a wet one and the other is dry so the trucks oil is only changed four times a year no matter what the mileage is and is only greased four times a year. We also have three trailers from penske and its just as bad. We had a trailer go in for a PM and it had a hold in the roof of the nose cap that you could clearly see out of and it came back from the PM and STILL have a hold in the roof. As long as the truck still cranks and goes down the road thats all that matters. If you get one of the units that was a daily rental you are asking for trouble. We have had these when are trucks are in the shop and they are beaten up. We had a unit come in that only had 38,000 miles on it which is brand new, but the back window had already been busted out of it and a new on rubber cemented in (glass was still on the floor), one of the stocks on the back of the cab was broken, both steer tires were smooth because the steering linkage was so badly bent, and the shifter was broken so that you could actually twist the top of the shifter from left to right like at top.

IF your thinking of buying a Truck from Ryder Truck Sales!!! "Think Again" this company is a rip off, I bought my first and only truck from this company! My truck came with an one year or 100,000 mile extended warranty, have not had the truck not even 6 months and transmission going out due to mechanical failer, So I did the right thing to immediately call the claims department with the claim they toyed around for a week (Remember a week is alot when not running in the trucking industry) just to tell me that my claim was *DENIED*!!!! They told me that the part that caused the transmission to fail was not covered so therefore they will have to deny the claim! (Man!!! I was heated~being that this was a mechanical failer and for them not to stand behind their lemon trucks will make you feel like you just been Robbed at Truck point) This is not the only problem I've had with this truck~within the first month the Radiator went out on the truck, and then the A/C decided to take a rest!!! Ryder is a complete fraud when it comes to their equipment sales they do not stand behind their equipment at all!!! I definitely feel that the compliants others are having with Ryder are Validated with no question asked!!! STAY FAR AND AWAY from Ryder Truck Sales!!!
