I only pay $250 a month for a room in a mobile home. Never really have to use my personal truck. Cost of living where I'm at isn't crazy. Just don't do your grocery shopping in a truck stop

    Big Duker Thanks this.

My husband got offered a job with Key a couple months back, he got cold feet I guess and told them he denied the position. Key started out at $19/hr; and he's makin roughly $16-17 /hr at Waste Management with real great benefits. SO, bearing all the BS that comes with North Dakota living these days, I guess he decided to hold out where he is. WM are real stingy when it comes to raises, it's the incentive pay that makes you money there. Twenty six cent raise in 2 years is for the birds!
ANYWAY...he has been feeling like he may have passed up a good opportunity to make a nest egg by bustin his butt a year or two out in the oil fields. Is there as great of opportunities as there was say a couple months to a year ago, or has things even out and companies aren't paying like they used to? What's your thoughts guys? Was he dumb to turn down Key? Should he once again start looking or just be happy where he is?

I can't direct you to the exact thread it was mentioned in but some forum members that are currently working in ND have said Key has lost alot of work recently! Although they have a yard north of Denver that services the Denver-Julesburg basin, they have had ads on different CO Craigslists looking for drivers for ND.Here is one ad: http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/trp/4135025606.html

I don't think he was dumb to turn down Key. I haven't heard anything good about them, quite the contrary. My husband worked in the nd oilfields hauling crude for a couple of years. Yes, the money was fantastic, but not all the time. He's now hauling environ. waste for a terrific outfit and is home on weekends. The money isn't as great but we have cut back on some expenses and are trying to make things work. Hard to do with our son going to college in a year. It's good, but not great, like your husbands Waste Management job. And now with the new health care act, we are just waiting and watching to see how high our premiums are going to go! My company and his and several others are being warned now that there will be increases, most likely "significant". If my family medical coverage doubles in cost, we are so screwed and he may have to go back to nd. The conditions are crap in nd...the roads, bad drivers, accidents all the time, crap weather, away from family, high cost of housing, prices of groceries thru the roof, transportation expenses to get home...just some things to consider. Then u r rooming with guys, who if u r lucky, will be decent, but sometimes they're not. Even taking all this into account, my guy still may go back. The money is a great draw, but u have to put up with some serious bullspit. If I were you, I would stay put, if u guys can afford it. Cut your expenses where u can. Especially if, as u say, your husband has fantastic benefits. If u r not able to make ends meet, then yeah, go. Hope this helps! Good luck to you!

No he didnt pass up a golden oppprtunity. I had a co worker who left Key and came over here to where i work now because he said they were so disorganized and the company was ran so poorly. My co worker has since left this company as well. He is at tessoro now and i hear he is very happy there.

Any of you guys up there know anything about a sand company named Philco? They are from Idaho, but hauling sand in ND. I talked to a couple of guys in Sioux Falls that work there. They were hauling a couple brand new pneumatic trailers up there. It sounded really good. Wondering if I should follow thru and give them a shot. Thanks for any info you may have.
