dennisroc, I am totally convinced that tarping is an artform. It isn't that difficult, but it does take practice to get fairly quick at it; I'm still working on the speed. Each load will have its own unique securement requirements - you get all of that in training along with a book and phone number if you have questions. There are basic DOT rules and Melton's are typically more stringent. The majority of the fleet is KW 660's with 10 speed transmissions. They have APU's with inverters installed. Excellent heating and cooling for all environments.

Jumping on the previous post, I attended training in Ohio and it was 4 days. You will go through the basic administrative stuff that every business has, a drug test (urin and hair) and test drive. After that you will go through procedures and spend several hours over 2 days securing different types of loads they have set up on the yard. Tulsa takes all of the brand new drivers with no experience, is my understanding. I did not have to go out with a trainer since I had enough OTR time. That was good and bad - I didn't like the idea of being trapped in a closet with a total stranger for a few weeks, but learning all of the tricks of the trade on your own was a bit stressful. Virtually every Melton driver and most other flat-bed people will help you if you ask; listen and learn, but keep the Melton way in mind. As for the physical, I'm 57 with no background in manual labor and weigh 140 lbs. I work hard and sweat, but I enjoy the variety it brings. Yes, you will use muscles you haven't used in a while.

Yea what trilettersaid pretty much sums it, its not bad after few times doing it and we have been hauling nothing bu sqaured tubing so not much practice on securement since been same #### thing after another. Sittinf in Gary Indiana watching the rain n people parking. The trucks are greay trucks just kinda smal for two people espically when trainer has microwave, fridge, griddle and all that stuff. Bit I get free coffee out of the deal.

Lol u are not allowed on my thread John. Just kidding. Ya oreintation seems pretty easy. I only been at it one full day but I was more nervous at the cdl school than here.

I will admit it guys. When I did my road test I did pretty much everything ok, shifting fine road speed ok, my line indicator never came on, but my last turn I went over a crub and the instructor didn't care. I joked about it and he said they only look at your shifting and car distance. I know back at the school I would had flunked it if I road over a crub :biggrin_2556:

Im in Birmingham . Day one consist of tons of paperwork, tons of nurses and doctors, tons of videos, tons of homework, and the road test.

The bright side is free food, and you learn a bunch of info the the cdl school dont teach u.

On a side note, I don't like people to fail but my roommate got kicked out because he could not shift the truck. It is not labeled like it is in the cdl trucks so if u can't shift a 10 speed don't bother coming to melton because they will send u back to where u came from in a heart beat.

Yea I was there last week. If anyone fails the road test they shouldn't be driving. There is homework everyday and LOTS of it. Have fun.

Sorry I haven't been updated this tread to much, past couple days have been hectic.

So Melton flew me to the Dallas terminal to meet up with my trainer last Friday but due to the ice I have not seen him. I finally got a call from him and we head out tomorrow. Sux being in a hotel room with someone else u don't know for the weekend.

Good news is they told me I'll be home for Christmas. Can't complain because I thought I was not going to make it.
