Hi guys I have just recently filed for my authority. I have pulled gooseneck trailers for 15+ years as i am 33 and grew up farming and hauling farm equipment. But just recently decided I want to become legal and do this for a full time job now. Anyway what i am concerned with is what is the best way to get started booking loads? Keep in mind that right now i am small cause i refuse to go in debt like some guys for something that I dont know will pan out in the end. I will upgrade trailers if business takes off or had the potential to with a larger trailer. Insurance is bad enough without having a 900 dollar a month truck payment and 400 dollar trailer payment every month on top of other expenses. I have an 08 Dodge 1 ton with a 25' deckover gooseneck. I have booked a few loads recently on Uship.com but that site is a joke. Between their fees, waiting to see if i won the bid for days, and also competing with any joe blow with a truck and trailer pricing at $1.00 a mile i just cant do it. Also have got some loads off a tractor board but its hard to find back hauls alot of times. So can you guys please give me some suggestions? And please no smart butt replies. i know you will say beat on doors, buy lunch, take em to a strip club yada yada yada. I am just looking for ways to get me started to get my name out there. Cant do it without any loads proving myself. I will talk crap loads starting out. I dont care. I would even be willing to lease on with a company if anyone knows of any. I am located in southern ohio

You should go and put in where you are in the side thingy! See my Signature! With you being in Indiana you should check the Camper companies in Indiana they would give ya work if you ad the proper Cargo ins. Good Luck.

luvtotruck I checked with one of the camper companies and they told me they were only hiring class A guys at the moment. And i also checked with J.B. Hunt fr intermodal work and they said i need to have my authority for a year. So i am trying but it aint going well. I would like to get into hauling cars cause there is a rail yard close to me that i see 1 ton pickups with 3 car trailers coming out of. i would buy a trailer for that if i could get in that line of hauling. Thanks for the suggestion though luvtotruck

I drive for S&S Nationwide Xpress and let them book my loads for me...it's worth the fee I pay them to keep my trailer loaded. I normally get loads that are close to my class limits for weight or for max space on the trailer. I have no worries about when or where that next load is going to happen. No sitting there waiting on bids from U-ship. You might want to give them a shout....

As for hauling campers....it's a lot of one way trips so that nice fee you see, cut that in half since you don't often get a return camper...I'm seeing more campers being loaded onto flatbeds so they can backhaul back home.

Youngtransport , I started out hotshoting leased to a guy in Piketon Oh. ( he is out of business now ) there was a guy in Baltimore Oh. ( he is out of business now) if you find somebody to lease with be sure they have their own freight, not just someone starting out getting all loads off the board.i agree don't spend money on trailer if you have one. However 25ft. trailer will handcuff you, I know, I ran one when I first was leased on, the guy that was running the said get short trailer ( he is out of business) start reading everything about hotshot you can find, you can do cars or freight. I talked to a guy in New Castle Pa. the other day looking for o/o I have his number can't verify him ( he might go out of business) the reason I keep saying that is if you are leased on to someone you have no control over the money. Hope this helps

Ya get a longer trailer. I was just using a 30' and was missing great loads cause they were a couple feet over 30. Went up to a 40' and couldn't be happier. There's a bunch of load boards out there, just start searching for them on google and you'll find one that works better for you. And don't worry about loads being only on certain boards, most brokers post their loads on posteverywhere. Just as the name says, that load is posted everywhere.
