The penny a mile is tarping pay. I think this guy wouldn't be happy with any company. Flatbed trucking is hard work and if you don't want to work then do something else.

    Therookie Thanks this.

I drove for McElroy before and I'm about to go back next month. All I can say is that my experience with them has been very good. The pay was good enough to live comfortably on, the loads were favorable and I never felt like I had to push myself to get them delivered on time, and most of all the people at McElroy were fantastic. They always seemed to genuinely care about us, got us home for appointments or emergencies, and always got you home on Friday. I had some problems at home that I simply had to leave for. I explained my situation and put in my notice. They treated me with understanding and compassion, and they even offered to minister to me if I would like. They let me know that I had an open door back if I ever wanted to come back. That was at the beginning of this year. I got my problems fixed and I called them up. They remembered me and fixed me up. I look forward to driving for them again. Almost all McElroy drivers help eachother out and I've met a lot of great ones out on the road that I run into regularly.

I do have to say that to me, $900 a week is nothing at all per week for an OTR driver. Honestly, I was making over a $1000 a week at times with Carretta back in 1991-thats 21 years ago! Even at MS Carriers, I made over 44,000 in 1990. I know to younger drivers today it seems ok, but wages have not improved much over the last 20 years. What could you buy for 44,000 back in 1990, and how far will that 44,000 go today? When fast-food wages have tripled since the 80's, driver wages have increased less than half.

It would be difficult it seems;. to support maybe a family of say 4, pay a mortgage, car payment, car and home insurance, pick-up the left-over dental and medical bills, buy groceries, pay vehicle upkeep and gas, buy clothes, pay for all your utilites, and buy pet food on 900 a week. Could you really save for retirement, take a deserved vacation, and have a debt-free Christmas on that pay? Maybe a single driver can, but thats about it.

    worldtrvlr,
Do you drive currently? If so, what do you currently earn on a consistent basis? You are correct that wages for truck drivers have not improved much since the 80's, but $40K+ starting out is decent money. You are also correct that it would be difficult to provide for a family on $900 a week, but that isn't the trucking industry's fault. There are many jobs requiring a college degree that start out paying less than $40K/year, and those fast food jobs you spoke of often require almost as many weekly hours as trucking does (the management positions, anyway) while paying less than driving pays. I know because I've done both.

Having said that, I only know one McElroy driver - and he is very happy there.

I work for McElroy and started from school at .43 That's not bad because it compensates the 2000-2500 miles a week. Home EVERY weekend. Short hauls have a great minimum too.

There are good companies out there. And with 1 year experience you qualify for most of them. You have to find a way to make this bad experience a good thing. I drove for a company for 2 years that took advantage of me. I don't think they meant to be that way. They just had too many trucks on the road and managing all those drivers made it impossible to please everybody. I'm VERY happy where I am now. It's a smaller, established company. The per mile pay is excellent and I get respect, pay and home time. It's out there driver500. Don't let it get you down. Look at the experience you got. Shale the dust off of your feet on move on brother.

Can anyone address dropping the truck at a lowes? What i'm getting at is do you leave your four wheeler waiting at lowes as well? The big reason for all the questions is my recently aquired cdl will hopefully be put to use use soon, have one week left at school and i would really like to go in a good direction first time out. This gig really did not sound too too bad at all, just trying to wrap my head around the way things work.
